What Hope hub is this and how do I remove the spacers?

Posted on
  • I got this wheel off @Hulsroy as literally the third wheel in a set. The other two are apparently Ti-glide Mono (according to a helpful person at Hope) and I've got some parts to repair them (again thanks to Hope).

I want to replace the bearings in this one but I can't find out what the hub is and can't for the life of me get the spacers/end caps off. On the Ti-glides you can just pull them off by hand as they're held on by a small O-ring in a groove on the axle. On this one you can't get purchase to pull them off, and I can't get anything in the crack to jimmy them out.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  • one one of my hope hubs you insert an allen key into the centre hole and unscrew the outer sealing cap

another pair you use pliers to just pull the outer cap off

maybe they are a bit tight and need some wd penetrating oil

  • also the hopetech website has videos showing how to dismantle most hope hubs and how to rebuild them

  • That one ^^^ looks proper ancient tho

  • are there grooves for an allen key inside the axle?

  • hope fatso ?

  • I would say they are defo a pull system. You need to try some penetrating oil and then tug ay them. Don't crack the ends though. Let us know how you get on. Looks mosy likely to be cartridge bearings in there as Hope started the trend off way back when...

  • Phil Wood used cartridge bearings in their early steel barrelled hubs, way back in '73 I believe.

  • I don't it's a Fatso, as there's no tangible allen-key thing inside the spindle. I can't find them on the Hope site either. The person at hope said they look like a "radial" (presumably referring to the name of a hub, rather than the obvious lacing pattern?) but that's not on there either.

Will try a smidge of WD40 in there.

  • I am sorry if these are causing you issues. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about them :(

  • Ha! No worries. For the price they're becoming a great little project.

WD40 and some very hard yanking (fnarr!) with pliers has got them (some way) off.

  • A vise might be better

  • If only I had one. It's on the list.

  • I let you know if we bin some at work.

  • That would be really useful actually. I was originally looking for one to remove a stubborn freewheel. Today I was literally about to go and buy one but I didn't, because snow.
