Berlin will be fucking cold and grim ...

Cologne is good, or a bit off the beaten track but Konstanz and Friedrichschafen in the far south are nice, Konstanz especially. Berlin is best though.

If you base yourself in Cologne you can quite easily ride to Bonn(30km), Dusseldorf(50km), and a few more interesting places down the excelent walking/cycling paths they've got there.

Not exactly a city break, but you could base yourself in Frankfurt and then head up to Wiesbaden, Mainz and then take a tour up the Rhine valley. Pretty nice and loads to see.
If in Wiesbaden, make sure you visit the "Schloss Freudenberg" ... some kind of weird Museum/Exhibition is the only way I can describe it.

Go to Berlin - i'd live there in a heartbeat. here are a few bars I like:
Sage Club is good. it's in an old train station and has a swimming pool. Though one night each week is S&M night (KitKatClub). Maybe avoid the pool.
http://www.sage-club.de/evecms/index.phpTacheles is worth a visit. It's an old squat. Was offered smack by a Billy Idol look-a-like there. I refrained but lots of fun. Not sure if developers have got hold of it though.
http://www.spottedbylocals.com/berlin/area/mitte/art-culture-mitte/tachelesYou have to go to Clarchen's Ballhaus in Mitte. Feels like you're at a war time wedding. Try to sneak down into the cellar. Spooky. Lots of other good bars around Mitte too.
http://www.ballhaus.de/Greenwich bar is nice - great drinks.
http://greenwichbar.com/End the night at Kumplenest 3000. The owner has the world's largest collection of Peter Pan bath mats nailed to the roof...

I like the sound of Berlin. What's worth doing? Looking at doing the tower.

I'd make the time to get out to Wannsee as well. It's a beautiful lake west of Berlin.

what about Munich? it seems to be more stereotypical German, which i like the look of.

The thing about Berlin is that in Winter, you can do museums and stuff, clubbing, drinking etc ... but it sucks in comparison to summer. Better save for the summer trip to Berlin, and go to south germany in Winter instead. Winter wonderland, if you're lucky, with snow and all that. Munich should be good, but it's NOT Germany, it's Bavaria!

It's not January but we are going to Baiersbronn for a few days, flying tomorrow. It appears it is the Germanic equivalent to St Sebastian with 3 Michelin starred eateries (we are booked into each of them). What else is there to do? Any suggestions?
I am planning a trip to Germany in January and was looking at Berlin. Seems alright but was wondering if anyone has any other places worth looking at?
Looking at shops, museums and something a bit interesting.
