Maybe it needed storage space for the upgrade data?

Guessing that's the case. Seems weird that Garmin wouldn't either alert you to that fact, automatically delete old rides when it knew there was an update available, or retain a portion of storage space specifically for upgrades. Ah well, sorted now anyway.
