  • Coming together nicely. You not going hydro 105 then?

  • Cheers bud. I'm more tempted by Hylex and Shimano RS685 shifters for example but thinking I'll wait untill prices drop or the hoods get smaller.

  • This is turning out to be well smart. I love it!

  • How effective is the clamp on the seatpost? I really like the look of it

  • The hood felt as slim as the Shimano Di2 shifter on the Hylex, it actually felt as long as the Shimano RS685.

  • @spotter I thought it would be a pita to adjust and more fiddly than an inline post, but it works very well. Always wanted a Moots layback post but yeah spendy.

Thanks @edscoble, just glad I'll be running 5800 now the rear hub has been sorted. Plan is to use Shimano hydraulic/mechanical levers in a few years whilst being able to keep my cassette and rear mech (& rear wheel).

5800 cassette, rear mech and chain turned up today. Getting there slowly.

  • I've used a star-fangled nut in a piece of spare tubing - it worked well, but you only have a few threads either side to engage with. I refitted my GB mudguards recently and replaced that setup with an upside-down top cap (to act as a properly sized washer under the steerer, and it's slightly conical too) and a stud connector. Not quite as aesthetic, but there's lots of thread to engage and I don't have to carefully file down the bolt to stop it bottoming out! Will grab a photo when I next have the bike out.

  • I did see a photo of a headset top cap mounted under the fork crown on here somewhere recently and thinking it was quite ingenious, can't seem to find it now. My main issue with the supplied crown daruma was the protruding bolt thread striking the spinning tyre and the challenge of cutting it at just the right length.

I've managed to get round this by using the fangled star nut in a tube and a flat head bolt helps eliminate any chance of rubbing. Also making the tube shorter than I need allows washers to micro-adjust. Will be making V3 of thing this weekend so will post some pics.

Very interested to see your answer too!

  • I may have mis-read the issue but would this help?

  • This was my initial go-to, but my mudguards don't have the L bracket on the top for this to work. I could fit an L bracket but so close with my own contraption I'm just going to see it through now.

  • Fair enough! Good luck, it's a beautiful build!

  • Some time ago I cut down a crappy chain tensioner and used it to buy my rear guard onto, thought it was a clever and simple solution

  • That was @Sparky here, he didn't go with that in the end. I found underside clearance a problem too, I filed the head down slightly but still have problems with road grit collecting on long mucky rides. This is the end product. I have some other threaded spacers that aren't hex profile which may look nicer, but they're longer and didn't give enough clearance.

  • I made a 'bit'. V3 of the front mudguard thing is fitted and working well. The spacers allow me micro adjust the height above the tyre which is what I was struggling with before.

(long bolt with nut goes through fork crown, washers above the guard with the flat head bolt securing underneath)

Thanks @TM and @hamrack for the input and ideas, much appreciated as always guys.

  • Looks good! Looking forward to seeing it fitted.

  • Anyone with inside info where I can source a Race Face narrow wide chainring - 110BCD/40t/black? Not having much luck looking online... Or if there's a decent silver equivalent I'm all ears.

  • Got a black raceface 44t that's only seen couple of hundred miles. Pm me if you're interested

  • @jambon maybe try Hub Velo for the chainring. They supplied me a 38t nw in 104bcd so they may well have other sizes and tooth counts

  • Superstar?

  • @plxarc pretty set on 40t after staring at a gear inch calculater for 30 mins. Thanks for the offer!

@funky_d will try them thanks, often in Clapton so pretty convenient.

@TM had seen these, good shout. Silver or black though? Now I don't want this to turn into the Moser tyre colour debacle.

  • I've got one waiting to put on my MTB and am happy with the quality of the machining and finish.

    I think silver.

    What cranks you using?

  • @TM good to hear, if I have no luck through Hub Vélo will seriously consider them.

  • How much would you want for the chainring?

  • Are those 105s asymetric bolt pattern, if so r/f won't fit. I'm waiting on a 40t wolftooth for my ultegra.

  • Very good point. Looks like my options are:

    Hmmm
