I've never used a posh dynamo hub so perhaps I don't know what I'm missing but there's absolutely nothing about my Alfine one that makes me think I should have spent (considerably) more for an SP or Son.

I can't see an Alfine at considerably less than an SP. Not saying they can't be had, or SP are especially better. How much did you pay for yours?

Edit: I see you were refering to the shimano jobber in that link. Spa have SP PV8 for £22 more, but the only real advantage will be that it's prettier / lighter. Then again you can service the bearings on the Shimano to a point.

Oh, I could be mistaken then. I thought the Alfine was about £40 from the likes of Rose and the SP was more like £80-100?

I bought my Alfine built in a wheel from a German ebayer for about £90 I think.
