I'm not assuming anything about anyone's motives, that's why I want to hear the response. I would like to know what compelled people to vote for something that will have utterly dire consequences.
-
• #7078
I would imagine that rather than dire consequences they see short-term difficulties leading to greatly expanded opportunities.
(although one of my friends voted Brexit believing that to leave would be better for the environment)

Happy to debate, but that comment from BorisTrump is exactly why you don't know why people voted for Brexit. Because every time they try to tell you they will get abuse, and labelled a troll.
I really am not looking for a fight, my comment was merely in support of Gina Miller and hers and others standing up to the outcome.

Really, how could they possibly come to that conclusion ?

That was based on no evidence though. I suspect (if it's who I think it is) that she voted that way because her grandad wanted her to, and convinced her to do so, and she's looking to justify it after the fact. As her reasons were all clearly based on "alternative facts" when she was expounding upon them.

Is worth noting that Environment as defined also includes stuff like Fisheries and Agriculture.
This is a good read

The potential policy and environmental consequences for the UK of a departure from the European Union.
There looks to be no real benefits other than possibly the UK fishing industry .

Debate, eh?
My first is that there cannot possibly be any other option once NI leave the EU than to have a hard border with the Republic. This is fucked and sets the whole Island back 20-30 years.
Counter or provide a benefit that out weighs that cluster-fuck.

Tongue in cheek comment on the Dutch migrating in droves in Caravans...not about Travellers who are still massively discriminated against, which is plain wrong.
Republic of doesn't even recognize them as an unique cultural and ethnic group.

I know, I was being facetious

And I welcome that, as it means you support parliamentary democracy.
There are many general trends for Brexit, but the right-wing media and Exit Polls have already been discussed. Not so much personal views, only one person came on board here saying why.
I have quite a few lefties on my Facebook, and my first gut reaction is "The Tories are in power, did you not see the Leave campaign leaflets, did you not expect this????" but they will not bend on some of their principles and hope the UK will now be better than the UK, a hope I don't share.
So far even polite questions have been extremely fruitless on Facebook. A few people are willing to acknowledge issues, but most of the time it's not even a "agree to disagree" but a repeat of things we have now come to realise have been lies or promises that could not have been met.
What genuinely baffles me is that people didn't expect this as a ginormous shitstorm, Tories in power, no alternative to the EU, trade agreements taking at least 10 years, being in a weak position... Hence my question.
I don't see a 10 year good vision either BTW. More a sucking up to the USA and NI sliding backwards...of course I understand sometimes you need to pay a price.
TL:DR I am frustrated as hell and genuine don't get it AND I think we are all going to get screwed and problems leading to brexit won't get resolved. But maybe you genuinely didn't think I was going to end like that, as the campaign promises are broken already. Not even talking about the NHS bus, but not leaving the EEC for example... We didn't know we were going to get May etc etc. Or have a positive vision.

The Germans have cars twice the size and caravans twice the size, always a lol to witness ;)

Well I voted against Brexit and I agree with you...
For the record Gina Miller is very keen to stress that her court case was about Parliament being consulted, which she felt strongly about, not about her trying to stymie Brexit.
It's almost impossible to say whether that's true or not, but that's what she says.
I do think whether you agree with her or not she's handled herself pretty well, rising above a lot of personal attacks by constantly pointing out that it's not about her or her background but her right as a citizen to bring the case.

Bicycles, joints, secularism, proper water management...
Also their kids aren't obese despite having chocolate sprinkles for breakfast every morning because they cycle everywhere and they can all swim because being taught to swim is seen as very important in a country with so much water also they have tolerance and liberalism and stroopwaffle and 55.1% of Dutch people identify with no religion which all sounds good to me.

They tend to use long sentences though and long compound nouns like inburgeringsbasisexamen.

So we are supposed to remain in the EU so Northern Ireland does not kick off again?
Well I don't live in NI so that did not factor into my decision process.
I think NI should have the opportunity to stay in the EU. They voted remain by a majority of 56% to 44%.
People tend to vote based on their own immediate interests. Is human nature. If I lived in NI I would have voted Remain.
There is no benefit than can outweigh the cluster-fuck that you will experience but that is the shitty end of any vote. Sorry thats all I have.

The last straw for me was standing at the station getting my train, and two guys furiously thrusting 'Remain' propaganda leaflets, paid for by the taxpayer to the cost of 6 million (IIRC)
Down my way everybody voted leave, my landlord had a fucking great sign saying 'Vote Leave'
Is bad enough people moving from London to the Cotswolds, the locals still have not forgiven them for the hunting ban. This swung my vote a bit. I don't have many friends as it is ;)

Anything that benefits the UK fishing industry will be environmentally catastrophic.

also they have tolerance and liberalism
I know you shouldn't generalise but, I have yet to meet a Dutch person who isn't at least level 'Racist Nan' on the prejudicometer.
-
• #7097
Also I truly think that nobody knows how this is going to work, which is why Cameron should not have allowed something this big to go to a public referendum. The disenfranchised working classes have a long standing beef and this was a perfect storm.
-
• #7098
Then no, there are no environmental benefits to Brexit. I guess at this point it is simply a natty portmanteau. I guess that factored into my decision too. I like portmanteaux. Or whatever the plural is.

'Racist Nan'
I read this like I was in a Indian takeaway

Can I have a portion of long standing beef and a racist nan please. With some poppadums.
You're against the travelling community? You're on the wrong island...
