Any idea if I can can use a Brevet Populaire for it or does it need to be the Brevet Randonneur?

I think it's Randonneur (or BRM?) only.

Edit: but now I've checked again I'm not sure why I think that. Possibly because BPs aren't accepted for virtually all other awards, except the fixed wheel challenge and AAA awards.

Probably safer to stick with that logic and do the longer.
