• Get a cheap 1TB drive and make a copy of all your documents, store it off site (in a welsh mountain obvs :)). Use Time machine to keep running backups on an internal HD, time machine will keep your library/applications/os backup too. Occasionally refresh your off site backup. Have a stack of DVD's with your most important documents on.

Worst case scenario your off site and time machine fail leaving you with nothing but a few DVD's of old photos/music etc. Normal case, you have Time machine restore your mac to it's most recent state.

You can do all this for the price of 1 3TB drive, 1 1TB drive and some DVD's. Think that's too expensive? Carry on and maybe the day never comes when you need it.

  • Makes sense.

Can you run time machine on an internal drive, can you get it to back up every couple of weeks/months, rather than hourly/daily?
I've got a spare 1tb drive which I can use internally to back up the boot drive, so was hoping to pop that in every couple of months, back up and then take out, until I need to do it all over again the next quarter. Possible to do with time machine? Or would I just need to get a case and use it as an external?
