  • Is the ghost of Alan Rickman as Severus Snape living in your neighbour's property?

Ha, that's the window to my Dad's garage workshop. I don't want to know what's going on up there...

  • Hey BN, amazing job and great info on the step by step account, now whats missing is some lovely potted plants below the window if only you had some lol, your parents must be delighted with the transformation...

  • Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but it's by far the best shed thread, so thought it made sense.

How do people store their measuring instruments? Things like rulers, set squares, tape measures, plastic rulers, bendy rulers, etc.

I'm struggling to think of any good solutions, so wondered if there were any common places?

Best solution is a shadow board, or at least having nails in a wall to hang things from (some rulers have a hole to hang them from something) for ease of reach. A small draw or set of drawers would be fine.

If you're a true mechanic - all over the floor.

  • Your definition of mess and mine are a whole world apart....

    This.

I have seen some bicycle shop whose workshop is in a terrible state, that I wouldn't want to drop my bike off to them.

  • shadow board

I wonder about this. Only two have holes in them, so it doesn't seem to be the best option as it would be nice to have them all in one place. Also shadow boards are quite space intensive. I do plan to try and sort one out once I feel properly settled.

A draw could work, but isn't that quickly accessible.

  • A pencil case? #oldskool

I have Bott Perfo pegboard for tools on the wall. They make various spring clips, hooks and racks for different tools to attach to the pegboard.

    They kitted out Brompton's workshops.

  • I'm certain I have seen,
    (maybe on the Kreg site),
someone had what resembled a double kitchen wall hung cupboard.

Inside were a series of half-width sliding shadow boards,
with the tools arranged by function.

Neat solution for space utilisation and the plain doors, when closed, keep tools concealed from prying eyes.

  • Nice looking stuff. The website takes a bit of work, but I think the horizontal slots could be good.

That's definitely an option. My thought was one with loops either end and then some L screws under a shelf to slide them on to:

  • Due to big windows, I don't have much wall space to play with. If I did, I'd probably use the modular stuff posted above. Shadow boards are nice, but who's not going to add to their tool collection at some point and need to re-jig things?

As it is, I like to put things away in draws or boxes once I'm finished with them. Seems tidier that way, and only slightly less convenient.

  • I try to be sensible and limit the amount of big things in the shed, but I have an awful lot of tools that require sharpening, so have just ordered one of these.

  • Not long now before we see this pic as your latest shed upgrade

After that, install the moat and you're done.

  • Noice!

Post in the knife appreciation thread. :D

  • Soon to be fitting one of these to the workbench

  • I say "soon".. Things happen very slowly in here

  • Is that for glueing large slabs/blocks of wood?

  • Is that for glueing large slabs/blocks of wood?

It could be, but it's meant to attach to the front of a woodworking bench, so that the jaws sit flush with ( or just below ) the worktop.

  • Some people integrate the back half into the bench, to make it lower profile.

You can also fit larger wooden inserts and effectively give yourself a much bigger vice.

The vice I'm fitting will open up to 9", so won't have quite such thick inserts

  • Can even be used to hold an engineers vice ( or in my case, a carving vice ), so that it's not permanently attached to the worktop, getting in the way.
