The damage does not go all the way around the stay and stops about half way.

@SideshowBob Indeed but the convex part (the actual seat stay tube is) damaged too, no? If so, it will definitely need welding. I was hoping only the plate was cracked.

Yes the convex part is damaged, So the plate is just on the outside "face" of the stay which has the EM logo. I understand now.

Wow! Never seen that colorway before. Reminds me of Nicco Wafers.

I'm thinking of selling it. I'm just about to keep 5, maybe 6 of my bikes (have 20 or something) and sell all the rest. I'm keeping my Merckx Professional (1981) and 1 Corsa Extra (1989, team Hitachi livery).

Guess you're not riding it this way. ;-)

Here is my Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra. The frame number is F 5438. On the right hand side of the bottom bracket it reads P 4X. I would really like to know what year it is and if anyone has a catalogue page with this frame featured.

The frame is in Gan colours. I tried to upload a photo, but can't see it at present.

Ref Gan Eddy Merckx - Not riding it yet, but have a set of Dura ACE 7400 ready to go in a week or so. Would really appreciate an accurate ID, preferably with a catalogue page showing the bike. No dents, twists etc. Just needs a bit of TLC.

F stands for the year: 1996 (could be right as Team Gan was sponsored by Merckx in 1996), X stands normally for Corsa Extra and the 4 means it's 54 cm. What the P means, I don't know.

The frame is in Gan colours.

My Gan livery Merckx is MXL.. Had it for 20 years and still love the colour scheme..

If you scroll down this 1996 catalogue untill you reach the MXL, you will find the GAN colours.

nice frame but wrong groupset. You should look for first gen C Record or Croce d'Aune as this is probably a 87 or 88 frame, no?

But even with the Record Titanium it will look nice. ;-)
