  • Anyone else see that meteor heading east over London at around 8:15? Very bright white/blue ball moving fucking fast.

  • That was Vladimir popping the Facebook satellite...

  • It was funny because our reaction was "oh well, they've started already".

But really, it was an amazing thing to see. Lasted a second and just happened to be outside looking in that direction at that moment.

  • Only a few weeks late.

  • Just did a Google and it seems there were a couple yesterday, a big one here in Victoria and another in China but that may have been the same one?

  • Seems our spaceship is flying through some pebbles at the moment.

Nice little reminder that there are HUGE ROCKS hurtling around all around us.

Too much child poverty? Change the definition of poverty and the numbers change altogether.

Too many migrants fleeing Eritrea? Then just ignore the indefinite detention, human rights abuses and 'shoot on sight' policy for people trying to leave, tell everyone it's really nice there and send them all back.

This government is utterly shameful, anyone who would ever consider voting for the Tories again is a wanker, and if anyone tries to tell you being British is anything to be proud of give them a slap.

  • Remember that Mitchell and Webb sketch where the two guys in SS uniforms are wondering if, just maybe, they are the bad guys? That's what being British must be like right now.

  • trident misfire. seeing as the shitting thing doesn't work, presumably any 'deterrent' value it may have had is now severely compromised.

if may knew about this cock up before the HoC debated renewing trident, surely she should be held to account?

  • One swallow doesn't make a spring.

Just because one trident missile suffered a malfunction whilst testing, doesn't mean that they all will. Firing missiles from submarines is genuine rocket science, and it's hard.

  • But don't they all run on some really old version of Windows for World War?

Maybe the Crazy Bears hacked them mid-flight?

  • right. "don't shoot nuclear missiles at the UK, or we'll shoot one back at you, or possibly a neighbouring country - results may vary"

meanwhile the NHS continues to collapse.

  • Ha! Yeah, this is really the meat of the issue. Launch missile off coast of Florida, aiming East; missile duly decides to point itself at America.

Pretty much the worst thing that can happen with a nuclear weapon. I mean really, it doesn't get any worse than that.

Trident is outdated and is clearly no longer a reliable deterrent if the things don't even work with 80% reliability.
The US does test launches fairly frequently but doesn't report the success rate.
Is it one in twenty that fail? How much is too much?

Providing one is following the line of non-proliferation, what do you replace it with?

I'd be tempted to risk it and do away with them all together. If someone wants to use them against us, so be it. It's on them and it won't matter to us because we'd all be gone.

Otherwise, renew the subs and missiles but that's all. You don't need 3,000 nukes to have a deterrent, just more than 0.

  • Windows for Submarines.

  • I think that this is missing the point a little - we lease all the nukes from the USA, they have an (in munition terms) very short shelf-life so there's a constant service/update shuffle going on to maintain "in-date" war heads.

So it's not independent from that perspective.

Secondly, we need permission from the US of A to fire the damn things - and given that we'd likely be firing them at Putin does anyone think that that permission is likely to be given by Putins favourite leader?

  • Another reason to not have them at all.

  • is this still the case if trmup realises his threat to remove the US from NATO?

  • Plus, you know, who wouldn't want to have £40,000,000,000 in chump change to blow on hookers, coke, hospitals and houses?

  • is this still the case if trmup realises his threat to remove the US from NATO?

Until such a time as we source warheads from someone else, yes.

We could ask North Korea if they'd lease us some I suppose?

  • Hang on... I knew a lot of Trident tech is USA made (not all obv. work is done locally so there is some UK benefit) but we don't even own the nukes?

WTF bullshit is this. It even fails from the "look at MY big rocker" viewpoint :/
