Read somewhere that the fix is to connect your laptop to your router, then create a wifi hotspot on the laptop, to which you connect your chromecast.
The chromecast can then update without directly connecting to your BT homehub and then once it's updated you can disable the laptop hotspot and connect it to the homehub again.

Although annoyingly, it seems the fix is to update the firmware. Which you'll need to connect to the internet to do. Which will reboot your router...
