Read somewhere that the fix is to connect your laptop to your router, then create a wifi hotspot on the laptop, to which you connect your chromecast.
The chromecast can then update without directly connecting to your BT homehub and then once it's updated you can disable the laptop hotspot and connect it to the homehub again.

Chromecast. Mine can't be joined to ad hoc network created during setup. It f-ing reboots my wireless router! FFS
