Do you want Facebook login?

  • We already offer you the chance to:

    • Sign in with Google
    • Sign in with Microsoft (actually Windows Live, but covers some Hotmail/MSN too)
    • Sign in with email (send you an email code)

That last one is annoying, frankly.

But I'm guessing that the group of people who don't have Google or Windows Live (Hotmail)... which is about a third of people who sign-in... probably do have Facebook and are logged in.

    So... is this wanted?

If it's wanted, I can add it even though to offer it to you I will need to go and get my own Facebook account (something that is against my religion).

If you want this... sell me on it. Because it's there as a capability, and it won't cost much, so it's really just whether I believe people would like it.

  • So which one is 'sign in with Microsoft' ?

  • updated my post... Microsoft is technically "Windows Live" login and covers some Hotmail/MSN accounts too.

  • Thanks - thought so

and yes -Sign in with email (send you an email code) - is annoying

  • I am in that third and do not want facebook login. Not that I really understand these things but I just don't like having to facebook log in to things.

  • I think I am in this group, although I may use Google login. Would rather use Google than FB for sure.

  • Well the extra ones I could provide would be:

    • Facebook
    • PayPal (for login, no payment required)
    • Github

I'd only want to consider adding the one with the biggest possible impact, i.e the one that served those who use the login with email.

  • Ummm, i think i am the email sign in (3rd choice of 3 listed)

Just automatically logged on somehow, seems every several weeks i do it again.

Don't do paypal, really not interested in facebook log ins. Happy with current system :)

  • Yeah, happy with occasional email logins. Any place I'm not already logged in I'd not want to use a facebook login.

  • I don't like using facebook to log into stuff due to it wanting your real name, not that I go to great efforts to avoid giving that out it's still off putting if you use even a poor alias for other stuff. I'm guessing you would just be using it to log in and there would be no way of linking someones's forum name to their facebook account information though.

  • Cool, it seems like people aren't clammering for Facebook, which is a relief as I didn't want ot sign-up to Facebook just to get the API key.

  • So glad....I try to live my life by avoiding that little blue 'F'.

  • Have you asked the question on the other forums you host?

I suspect the answers would be broadly similar but OTOH LFGSS members are a mostly homogeneous group in terms of ideas and interests so we might not fit the general model.

FWIW I try and stay logged out of Facebook wherever possible because of tracking, but I know that isn't true for most people who use Facebook

  • I haven't. But aside from Rapha (which uses their own choice of Auth0 config) and Espruino (which also uses their own choice of Auth0 as they want to offer Github login)... LFGSS makes up the majority of logins.

Whatever I do would apply to all sites, so asking the place with the majority makes the most sense.

  • Biggest bugbear is being forced to use FB login, second biggest is being forced to use it when alternate (email/etc) flakes out.

  • While I don't like facebook login and wouldn't use it. I do honestly think it's likely to be a good addition, lots of people use it on other sites and anything which makes the sign up process easier for new members (unfortunately harder to ask the people who didn't bother signing up due to not having gmail) helps keep the community from stagnating.

  • As much as I'd love to disagree with Laner, they have pretty much hit the nail on the head....like the bikes we ride technolgy does move on....

  • The proxies at work block facebook login but not google login.

  • So far we have:

    1. People who would not use
    2. People who would not use but imagine others would
    3. People who couldn't use because Facebook is blocked

    Still seems pretty compelling.

That said, I've signed up and registered for a developer account so that I can at least test it and if there is demand it can be added. I'll check things like "Does it include any Facebook asset on the login form that I have, such that Facebook would know the form is presented even if you choose to login by a non-Facebook method?". Those are the things I care about.

Also... first time I've seen Facebook in almost a decade... it looks exactly the same as I remember it, and it looks so dated. Cannot believe people use it.

  • Every time they change something, the outcry is apparently bigger than any political protest.

  • I wouldn't mind it, I log into the forum on several different computers and have to log out after, the current authorisation code thing is slightly annoying but I can't figure out how to change the email associated with my account here to allow me to use the google login.

  • Alternatively... login with Google, PM me the old and new usernames (i.e. hp and user46875) and I'll swap the emails around so that you can just use the Google sign in.
