  • This aims to be a collection of film camera reviews for future reference (for digital cameras go here).

Care to share your experience with a camera you're familiar with?
Consinder writing it up in here!

Also there's great reviews already out there, puttings links to them in this thread is a good idea as well!

  • I'll start with a write up on my favourite 35mm compact camera, the Nikon L35AF

You can read it over at Bellamy's site: http://www.japancamerahunter.com/2016/05/camera-geekery/

As mentioned in that review there's an article on the lens design by Haruo Sato for the nerds, here.

Some of the pictures I shot with it can be seen here, also there's a flickr group with more examples.

  • I love that you can use filters on these.

  • Anyone got a Lecia Minilux? / have a review / opinion?

  • Ah I really wanted that. Free on here? Good little cameras though I haven't used one myself

  • Always wanted one, but was put off by people talking about the error message that made them useless.

  • Nah that was the 'mini' that I snapped up. It works! just need to put a roll through it.

  • Ah thats the one. Well if it needs a new home, you know where I am :)
It can live beside its older brother, my M3

  • I love that you can use filters on these.

    Yea, that's neat.
The (cheapo) lens hood you see on the picture is threaded as well..

Also one of the few automatic point-and-shoot cameras where you can easily adjust the ISO (without hacking the DX code of the film canister)!
Note there's two different versions of the L35AF - one goes to ISO 400, the other (later model) to ISO 1000..

  • The Olympus XA, 35mm rangefinder compact camera - 5 Stars when working properly but shutter buttons can fail.

    A quick review I wrote for 35mmc.com

  • How can we have a directory as such so people like myself can look for say a medium format camera and then see what everyone uses and there opinion on them?

Just so someone doesn't have to scroll through the whole thread.

We could have a basic rating system too if people don't have time to write a full review!

  • If the OP is updated with a list of links that would work.

  • Yeah It would.

    So an example would be

    Mi7rennie- handles

Camera 1- *** -Link with review/general thoughts/ no link etc
    Camera2 -**** " "
    Camera3 -***** " "

    Feel free to improve!

  • Or people could use the hashtags? #largeformat for example (in the expectation few people will actually look for large format cameras on here)

  • I guess hashtags would be a simple but practical solution?
Film format / brand / model?

I'm adding some to my post above - if you could do the same @mi7rennie we can check how it works..

  • A little bit on the Mamiya 7ii here.
    #Mamiya #120 #6x7 #medium_format

  • Nice review. Anymore shots?

  • Cheers, yeah there's a few here.

  • Nice write up!
Still dream about shooting with one of those..
    ..some day!

See you have one of the little Nikons as well - ha, won't forget to take the lens cap off this one, given the idiot-proof design!
    ;-)

Ps: Could you add hashtags to your post so it's searchable (like '120', 'mamiya', ..)
    Cheers!

  • Cheers, Will do!

    I found the L35AF in Sweden. Cost £1 😬

  • Nice!
I got one as a gift, but for the other I paid €45,- (it's woth it though)..

  • Nice one. Where'd you borrow it from? I'm going hiking soon and snow holing and would love to get one. What are cameras like in belor 0 temperatures?

Also are you familiar with the Fuji medium formats like the GW690iii?

  • I know someone who has access to one but it's not something I can make a habit out of unfortunately.
For really cold stuff, a film camera is probably the better choice over a digital. I'm sure something like this would be fine – it's mostly plastic anyway. Very little mechanically and electronically to go wrong. The type of battery it uses is very temperature resistant too. How below zero are we talking? Most people taking photos in the arctic are using DSLRs but keep batteries in inside pockets until needed.

Haven't used a GW690iii but they are no doubt great value compared to the Mamiya. The Fuji seems to go for around £400 on ebay but the Mamiyas are usually listed around £1600-2000.

  • Yeah it should be fine then.

And why does it fetch such a higher price?

  • What are cameras like in belor 0 temperatures?

You may need to reduce/slow temp changes to prevent condensation in lenses.
