weird not on their website. https://www.nabendynamo.de/produkte/sondelux12_en.html

  • Killed how? Trashed bearings?

    Yup. Awful lot of play.
Though I must admit I rode in shitty conditions (several days of typhoon rain), the hub went under water one or two times, and I jumped my fair share of curbs.
I should send to hub back to SP to have the bearings changed (they offer the service for about 40 quids), but I don't have a spare wheel.

  • Me either which is why my bike has been out of action for months and why I'm thinking about building a second dynamo disc wheel.

  • Can't remember who said this, but was someone in the know... even SON have had a load of warranty returns on thru axle hubs due to bearing issues so I don't believe it is merely an issue with SP but more, using a thru axle with a dynamo hub blah blah blah can't remember the rest.

  • I'm thinking about building a second wheel two. Most likely with a Shimano hub, since they're so cheap.

  • There doesn't seem to be any problem with QR SP hubs so stick with them unless you're feeling flush!

  • I already own a thru-axle version which I don't need because I ended up with a QR fork. I was thinking of getting an SP QR model and lacing it to a deeper front rim for the longer, flatter TABR race (and as a backup when I break the other wheel).

  • wanna sell me the thru axle version?

  • I've got a son 25 15 laced to a hed belgium + , spaim d light spoke. All black. Built by justridingalong.com

I might be tempted to part with it for a good offer.

  • I'll pm you.

  • Sorry, nope, it's my only wheel at the moment. It's just been rebuilt.

  • Without UTFS, what's the recommended dynamo (disc hub) and light and USB setup on a budget? £65 PD8 from SJS seems like a good starting point, or are the wheel and light bundles offered by Spa decent value? http://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s209p3320/SPA-CYCLES-SP-PD-8-IQ2-Eyc-Disc-Wheel-and-Light-Bundle

I've got a CL25 rim on the front at the moment which I got for a song ages ago, and I'm tempted to relace that to a new hub rather than get a 600g 29er rim.

  • Check Spa's prices on the hubs alone, they are the cheapest last time I checked, which suggests those wheels are a good deal but not sure how it all works out.

  • weird not on their website. http://nabendynamo.de/produkte/sondelux12_en.html

    Now added to their website.

  • If you are happy building your own wheels I'm pretty sure that will be cheaper than getting SPA's built wheels.

At least I hope that's true because I just ordered a hub and rim to build myself.

  • I've had my Shimano DH 3N72A completely submerged in a large muddy ford and it's still fine. I'd buy one again like a shot.

  • £130 for a PD8-Sapim Race-Archetype build seems like an alright price, if I can find my wheel building stand...

  • Is this a rebranded PD-8? It's pretty cheap

  • From what I can remember it's not rebranded but there has allegedly been some design input or collaboration with SP. Obvious differences were weight and one manufactured in China the other in Taiwan.

Friend has one for commuting, no complaints so far.

Edit: looks like both are now manufactured in Taiwan

  • EDIT: £4 cheaper for a proper pd8 though...

There don't seem to be any differences apart from the alpkit being marginally heavier.

  • My dynamo wheel is back! The Kinesis lives! No more commuting on fucking mountain bikes! Much yay. So joy.

  • A user on CTC has had some communcations with ISON and apparently they're doing refurbs on SP hubs

  • Advice required -

I have a SON dynamo wired to Supernova front and rear lights. I want to buy an igaro d1 to allow me to charge USB devices.

Is the correct order SON>Igaro>[any devices]+Front light>Rear light?

  • I'm pretty sure you want the Igaro and lights in parallel, so that the lights are still getting their power straight from the hub.

  • No, it's the new KT model. They used to make the hub shells and assemble for SP - hence looking very, very similar...
