I thought it was good but not great. Nice story, nice message (love > ambition), nice leads and scenery (Gosling, Stone and LA all beautiful), and some great swoopy camera.
They just keep singing and dancing for no reason though. I found myself at various points tensing up and thinking 'please don't sing again.'
Yet I can't remember a single song or a particular bit of dancing, whereas I saw Singing in the Rain once and Good Morning is still stuck in my head.
It's another film in the great tradition of films about Hollywood and its role in the American Dream. We get it, directors and audiences love nostalgia, but watching people achieve their dreams of being not particularly useful members of society wasn't really life changing.
This. Gave up after an hour of LALaLand. Waiting for tension, plot, anything interesting to happen. Cinematic tension trad jazz vs updated jazz?. I think not.
