Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • I mix and match all the time but I'm not that demanding on my brakes.

I like centrelock because it saves mechanics from themselves. That said, most of my wheels are six bolt. Go figure.

  • Ta, H.

So road rotors don't have diff cooling requirements from MTB ones? I thought probably not but have always found disc brakes a bit witchcraft-y.

  • If combined weight on the bike is large i.e 90kg or more I'd consider finned rotors from Shimano with centrelock hubs so you can use 140mm finned but only if you find 160 is too powerful.

  • but have always found disc brakes a bit witchcraft-y.

You clearltvhave not experienced the voodoo craft of setting up cuntis

  • Being said weight+, but also being unable to have finned Shimano 140 rear, what is the next best thing?

  • if you find 160 is too powerful.

    Do you even modulate bro?

    @gillies, Just fit a 160mm, you'll be fine.

  • On my Hope and Magura brakes, yes, because control is where they really excel.

  • Thanks very much for the Freeza recommendation. They arrived today (140mm) and are a work of art. Totally overkill for commuting on but still.....
Hopefully get many 000's of happy miles out of them. Thanks everyone for all of the sound recommendations. Suddenly, disc brakes don't seem so scary any more once you see all the buts coming together.

  • Measured the length of brake cable I needed using string. I then looked at the Odyssey Linear Slic-Kable and it seemed to be just a smidgen longer. It's arrived and it's 7cm too short. Damn.

Ideas for decent linear brake cable by the metre are welcome.

  • They also perform exceptionally well

  • Where are you? Condor sell Jagwire Keb-SL pre-cut in 2 m lengths on the shop floor (£8?) but obviously have a dirty great roll of it in the workshop.

  • I'm quite a way from London but do visit for work occasionally, so that's good to know; thanks.

Is the Jagwire Keb-SL a true linear cable or Jagwire's version of compressionless? I've got some Jagwire (don't know the code) that my LBS said was compressionless, but it's far from great.

  • Superb, thanks.

  • but it's far from great.

That because of the Kevlar being used rather than an outer coiled housing.

The Yokozuna Reaction is a true compressionless housing, however your braking performance could well be the pads not sitting straight on the calipers (quite common) resulting in a soft feel and/or the mount not 100% straight.

  • Is there a diagram, tech drawing, spec or testing to back up these "truly compressionless" claims? I bet they haven't squeeze the gaps out between every atom. Lying bastards.

  • Honestly no, I had the Jagwire, Yokozuna and TRP housing, the Yokozuna is the one I had a noticeable improvement.

Having said that, with a dodgy caliper, they felt like standard Shimano housing.

  • Surely Nokon is the way to go. £££, anodised purple/gold/pink/whatever, mix and match, probably gets the most likes.

  • I'm not sure the kevlar would make much difference apart from weight, the linear strands are what make it compressionless, like a gear cable, the outer kevlar or whatever stops it all exploding apart.

  • Nokon are awesome, and I had them, but they actually do required some maintenance, particularly since they have a tenancy to creak.

  • the outer kevlar or whatever stops it all exploding apart.

    It does.

The Yokozuna is basically a combination of the gear and brake outer housing.

  • Jagwire do a Nokon copy too. I has.

  • Oh yes, that they do, can't comment on how much they work tho, but the Elite Link are surprisingly affordable.

  • I'm confused. Why is the kevlar worse than a coiled outer. I believed the kevlar was there, as snottyotter suggested, to stop the cable bursting under load. I thought the linear strands kept the length constant.

Regarding pad alignment do you mean the pads not being parallel to the rotor? I had wondered about this. They do look to be off a very slightly. The frame rear spacing is 132.5mm. Presumably this makes the brake adaptor mounts not perfect for either 130 or 135mm OLD hubs.

  • floating disc rub on the caliber - do I just get the file out?
