Oh, it's terrific setup on the Kona. I was referring to one time where I put an 80mm and mary's on a road bike. That was awful, or at least about 10 times twitchier than I like.
Honestly, I think you'd have to wider than the Mary's to get to full benefit.
Something like 680-730mm wide, as I recall the Mary's are 640mm
I thought as much. My lava dome really is a lovely frame, and after I added v-brakes it now stops incredibly well too.
I changed mine, because I tried to put my backpack on the rack one day, and the steering went from great to really sketchy - my thinking was, that a wider bar would provide more leverage to counter the wheel flop made worse by the extra weight over the front wheel.
Now the ride is incredibly stable - I had feared the worst about putting a 50mm stem on, after having tried a 80mm with on one Marys on a road bike - but this setup is something else!
