• I've taken to benjam's method too, of creating a den of a safe space. Hazel has a dog bed (giant pillow) in there, a blanket, a rug/blanket covering the top and sides and I sewed a little pillow for her too, which I think she quite likes. She goes to bed there on her own during the day and at night. Taking her teddy with her. I've always left the door open in the night.
Only locked her in when she's been particularly naughty, or I've had deliveries etc.

Kongs and peanut butter....they go mental for it

  • Taking her teddy with her.

I've never met Hazel, but I think I love her. :) She sounds so sweet.

  • one day! yeah im surprised she hasn't ripped her teddy apart yet. She's very sweet!
It's hard to explain your dogs character.

  • This little fella will be coming home with us in 5 weeks.
Our first ever dog. A working Cocker spaniel, called Dylan.

  • Yay! Coming to us mid Jan...

Will turn into something like this...(her mum)

  • gah puppies!

Anyone fancy post-xmas hampstead heath dog meetup?

  • Lovely pups!

I met a Bavarian Mountain Hound yesterday - a first for me. Really playful, full of energy, Herbie had a great time. Then a totally mad two-year old Golden Retriever today, he's exhausted...

  • My lads are on the Heath every day, and they don't take kindly to strangers on their turf.

Actually, the only thing they like more than new dogs is going to the Stag.

  • Awesome doggies - what's the second one? Super handsome.

Mine is sat under the desk at the minute, bored out of his tree despite a pre-office ball workout. Going to have to take a little walk around the hills at lunch.

It's difficult to get enough running in with the short days at the moment. Cattle dogs with energy left in the system after 7pm are a menace....

  • Pepe had a good day...

  • I got attacked on Thursday by a dog a friend is fostering. A 12 month old lurcher, with some really traumatic history. If she hadn't been muzzled I would be missing a testicle or two.
So I have decided to see if I can adopt her! She comes to me for a try out on Tuesday.
Within 5 minutes of her attack she was eating treats out of my hand and was chasing my dogs all over the park, teasing them and playing like she had always known them. I couldn't believe the difference. The charity that is trying to rehome her is on the verge of putting her to sleep, as nobody will take her on.

  • Awesome! All the best with her, show us some pix of the lady in question.

  • My partner is a dog loving vet so it was only a matter of time before one came home from work. She's a stray who's obviously had a bit of a rough life, very jumpy so in need of a bit of love. Got to wait 7 days in case an owner shows up, but if not then we'll have a new addition for Christmas.

  • Bit late...but the one I posted is an Irish Terrier. Like smaller, more ginger airedales.

  • 25 days into having Otto in the house. He's just over 12 weeks old now.

Its not so much that we underestimated what would be involved, more that its hard to understand until you're actually doing it.

On Monday he actually slept through the night with no toilet breaks which was amazing. No accidents for a over a week.

Poor little fucker has the shits because we changed his diet too quickly. Lesson learned.

Starting to freak out a bit that we haven't started to get him used to being on his own yet. Want to avoid having a dog with separation anxiety when we have to leave him for short periods if possible!

  • This is Loki, who has now been with us for a year

  • I like his tiny human feet.

  • Thank you - he is a rescue Jack Russell Springer cross, or so we were told....

He's very relaxed, provided he gets enough exercise (which of course is true of most dogs). This is one of my favourite pics:

  • How's it going a month on? Beautiful dog!

  • Anal glands!
There that got you attention. There isn't an AQA dog thread so I'm asking here. When I was a lad we had a Golden Retriever that used to chew his back feet and legs and I remember it being anal glands causing frustration that made him do it. It used to be such a frequent thing that my mother became proficient at it.
Advance 40+ years to now - My stupid 9½ yr old Sprollie* has started chewing the base of his tail. It started at the same time as him dropping to the sit and having a good root about around his bum. It's a weekend so no conventional vet until tomorrow but am I right in thinking glands?

    • 7 loooooong years we've had him and he's still a pain in the arse rescue dog.

NB. Up to date with worming and flea treatments.

  • Yes, anal glands indeed. You know how to empty them don't you?

Used to be a laugh with an angry staffie...

  • Wife took our dog to get his nails trimmed (he grizzles when we do it but is much more accommodating of strangers).

However they had a bed that raised electrically and he fidgeted as the bed moved and he got his leg trapped in the mechanism. No harm done to him but he did void his glands all over the room!

  • I sort of remember but I know he would be as keen as I would be to do it. I hope the vets/nurses can sort him out tomorrow. Thanks for confirmation.
