Will you be mixing at home only or on the move too?
-
• #978
Mostly at home, why do you ask? Bulk?

Open back sound best for mixing but leak and let in noise. I use open back DT880s at home but not great for tracking as they bleed clicks etc into acoustic guitar takes and they wouldn't work in public. Will need closed backs myself to mix on the go. Started using earbuds for tracking recently. Revelation!

HD25s still have to be worth a shout for great portable all-rounders.

How do you rate the DRM 1?
I don't really 'need' one, but I kind of want one. :) -

I think it sounds excellent but possibly a bit dated in terms of control - all parameter changes/modulations have to be done manually in real time. Great in the studio to get you away from the computer, not so helpful live as it ties up a pair of hands (or you leave it static). If you find one for a good price I don't think you'll be disappointed but it's not the first drum machine I'd buy (although it is currently my only one).

It would be for studio use, so i dont mind the controls situation. I'd just rather have something a bit less common than the usual roland fair. And seperate outs are a big plus for me.
I'd still happily take a Linndrum LM2...But I'm not paying two grand for one!
I'm gutted I missed out on getting the one Bronski Beat used on 'smalltown boy' a little while back, but I just didn't have the cash. :( -

I use this http://www.alyjameslab.com/alyjameslabvlinn.html instead of a real Linndrum, although I think it's based on the LM1 rather than LM2. Would also love the real thing!
I think the sounds on the DRM have lot more range than any roland but they're not all necessarily good. You can always layer up multiple drums per part though - don't have to use them the way they're labelled either!

I'm not really a fan of using the computer until I really have to. . . So one day, a Linndrum shall be mine! :)

I was quite impressed by the Arturia Drumbrute when i had a play a couple of weeks ago. . . But because its's such a bargain I've got a feeling it's going to be everywhere. So i've deliberately held off for now.

Nice work Festus! edit (listened right the way through now and it's right up my street! Great track)
Also has a couple of my favourite tracks either side...Ebonics, and Re-Run Home! :) -

TB03 definitely has a totally different character to the TB-3 - very authentic, just a little 'thinner' than a real 303 (doesn't have the bottom end and the real 'wobble/squiggle' factor)
Nothing an over driven tranny cannot help with..

anyone on here in Music Sync or supervision? my nephew wants to get into it and is looking for some guidance - he's 21 and will start an undergraduate course in music business in September (London or Brighton)... can anyone offer any advice?
Cheers!

Right. New Mac up and running and I'm ready to go to Logic X (been using 9 for the last four years). Apparently my Waves plugins are 64 bit and will survive but my favorite Softube bits are 32 bit.
Was looking at the annual subscription for a bundle but the bits I really want aren't included. $489 to buy outright. Ouch.

this does look good though...

You're in for a treat.
There are 'bridges' you can buy to run 32bit plugs in 64bit DAWs. Worth spending a bit of time with Logic's native plugins for a while though - incredibly powerful bits of software.

I used to really rate the space designer reverb in 9

It's still in X plus they've got a TONNE of really cool impulses for things like apple earbuds, broken transistor radio speakers, stuff like that. Plus obviously huge cathedral verbs and stuff.
The new EQ is great too.

Does anyone know their way around Audacity? I'm trying to "hard limit" a mix but my version on a mac doesn't have the option.
Basically I'm looking for an easy way to level out the overall volume, and then amplify the entire mix.

Don't know Audacity i'm afraid. Can't you stick it in Garageband and do master buss limiting there?
Or if f you send me an WAV file I can run it through a mastering compressor and limiter in Logic if you like?
Both really, I'm not a fan of pleather either but the reviews on these don't seem too bad and I may be able to get staff discount on them...
