I just entered the cycling world after being given an old Somec. I do not know much about it but I came here in hopes you guys could educate a guy like me on this bike.

Welcome to the forum. That's a very nice gift and you should consider yourself extremely fortunate. It looks like the frame is in great condition and has a Super Record groupset which was the best you could buy in the 70s-80s.

That's in cracking condition for its age.

Thanks for the feedback. This was left to me in a will and I was shocked at what I have learned following receiving this bike. I've been told it is a low end old bike (by someone that wanted to purchase it) and also have been told hang on to it because it is a special bike.
I am looking for experts like you guys to give me feedback before making any decision on it.. Thanks again for educating and old firefighter on a subject he knows nothing about. -

Cheeky bastard trying to tell you it was low end! Did you put those tyres on?
-
• #191
The local bike shop took care of that for me

Did you put those tyres on?
They look like Sprinter tubs, so probably not :)
edit @user72943 beat me to it.

Like @SideshowBob said, it's a Super Record groupset on it (the cranks and front derailleur are Nuovo Record) , which was the best. Also has a Cinelli Unicanitor saddle, the frames in great nick too. Need a closer look at the Columbus decal, but looks like it could be SL.

Have you got any pictures outside in natural light or can you take some ? The reason I ask is that the frame paintwork looks to me like it could cromovelato. I think the age of the bike is late 70s to early 80s from the brake cable guides on the top tube and that I think the paint work is cromovelato and it is certainly not a low end bike.
Are there any serial numbers on the underneath of the bottom bracket ?
One way of possibly dating the bike is to contact the company directly at
somec@somec.com and when you email them attach the pictures you have posted here. It's in beautiful condition and has clearly been well looked after. -

Saw there bikes on a fair this week. They still build very nice steel bikes.

It certainly does look like the paint work is cromovelato. I believe the process is where the frame was chrome and then a lacquer was applied on top. It didn't always wear well but your example looks lovely.

Pffffff.It's Stunning Somec anyhow.SL tubes.Model is Super Corsa 84'.Great Burgundy paint code.Congratulations
Lovely collection mate!!
Original pantographed items are hard to find even in Italy. But you can have them done by Somec themselves.
These are the prices Somec quoted me few months back:
Stem 15€
Seatpost 12€
Crankarm & Chainring 30€
Chainring only 16€
Of course they'd use modern lettering and iconography, but you can require an old style, but they'd do it only if the item allows it and if the pantographer is willing to do it possibly at higher prices.
