Coffee Appreciation

I've got this and it's been great so far.

Seems to create a lot of static though, and the grounds end up sticking on every surface in the hopper. Is that a feature of electric grinders or unique to this one?

And what grind size have people had the best experience with for a) AeroPress and b) espresso machines? I'm still new to this business and trying to learn by doing but a leg up is always helpful.

Static is just a result of spinny motor and plastic, just something you have to put up with on cheapy grinders. I even have to use an earth strap on my Mahlkonig shop mill in my kitchen.

Grind size for espresso is the one that produces a 25 second-ish shot when all other factors are consistent. For aeropress there are many ways to skin a cat. I use a finish drip filter grind with 18g of coffee, steeped for 90 secs. Keep all your variables consistent, then adjust grind until it tastes neither concentrated and heavy or weak and pissy.

Sorry, I kinda figured you were looking for something with as good a grind as the porlex but without the effort. If you find those machines give you that then please let us know!

And the suggestions are appreciated, I just reckon mrs_com would not be happy for me to drop over £100 for my first electric grinder.

yeah, I haven't had (but have given) electric burr grinders in that range before but I haven't been told they're amazing so assume they're not. IMO the mantra 'buy cheap buy twice' is likely to apply to things involving gearing, friction and consistency of output.

If it helps my electric grinder was about £150 fifteen years ago and it still going strong (Gaggia MDF). Value for money!

My hand grinder was about £40 10 years ago.

I picked up a Gaggia MDF from eBay for £40.

Does what it needs to do pretty well.

Klean Kanteen products are the best. They defo do one that fits in bottle cages. They also do a non spill drink through lid that fits all the wide neck bottles.

Gaggia is now rebuilt, new seals brass grouphead fitted, de scaled (funny we have no limescale here)
Does any body have a decent link to a wiring diagram?
Always check that the pen you use to label connectors etc is permanent.

I've just bought a Molitta Molino for £45 off Amazon and i'm impressed so far. I've been experimenting with the 17 grind settings for pour over and its very consistent. I'm currently in Milan and will be bringing back a Moka Pot to have a play with also.

Which Gaggia? I have the baby class wire.

Might bite - what's the date on them?

Got given a bag of these by my father-in-law's partner. She ordered a bag, received a box. Contacted them to let them know what had happened, got sent another bag as an apology.
