Dynamos push forward as almost much as they resist, so this is a non-issue.

Correct.
Because magnets.
-
• #855
So just choose the dynamo with the lightest, most aero magnets, then?
-
• #856
Nah, just choose SON.

SP Pv-8 & pd-8 are £60 at spa! Get in.
-
• #858
Can they be converted to thru-axle?
-
• #859
Not as far as I know. Think that's a seperate model that they don't sell, but I'm going to give them a call and see what their price would be on the centre-lock model. If you're after something specific let me know and I can ask.

So i'm hearing that SP hubs for thru axle are shit/prone to breaking, so now looking at SON.
Am i right in saying they only do a 15mm, thru axle 6 bolt hub? No centerlock in 15mm thru axle?

From Shutter Precision's own website:
"The resulting thinner bearing races as well as smaller individual ball bearings together that the 8X is, by design, incapable of matching the durability of our 8 Series dynamo hubs.
[...]In theory, 15mm suspensions forks together with the QR15 thru axle should be stronger than standard. However, the mechanical design limitations outlined above mean that the 8X Series dynamo hub will be less durable in practice than the 8 Series hubs.
In short, where durability is more important than performance, we recommend 8 Series dynamo hubs."http://www.sp-dynamo.com/8Xseriesdynamo%20hub.html
I'm not sure what qualifies as "severe conditions applications" but I killed my QR-model SP8 in approximately 17000 km ; I don't find reassuring the fact that it is supposed to be the more durable model...

I guess that makes sense. I hear there is a a new 8x model being released around March time...

Anyone have a recommendation for a thru-axle 24h dynamo?
I notice the lack of 24h everywhere, or when there are some that they are QR. But perhaps I don't know the dynamo market well enough.

No centre lock thru axle.
https://www.nabendynamo.de/produkte/son_28_15_en.html
I have one of these. 6 bolt is fine. Just get good bolts and torque correctly (not super tight), with some loctite 243.
-
• #865
That's dynamo market. Does not exist.
Or I'd have zipp 404s laced to a 24h son disc hub.You could get 32h hub and lace it to 24h rim with 16/8 pattern.

This is the kind of thing that may make my wheelbuilder weep. I had a bad enough time getting a hybrid crows foot onto a dynamo without them freaking.
-
• #867
Yeah I thought about it, but discounted it. Not worth it for me.
Just go 32h, it's bombproof and reliable. -
• #868
I chose to email SON and just ask them if they'll make some.
-
• #869
Killed how? Trashed bearings?
-
• #870
Who's broken one?
They do CL but this is 12mm...
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dynamos/24-schmidt-son-delux-12-disc-dynamo-front-hub-black-anodised/Maybe I should be worried about mine but so far so good and SON are twice the price.
-
• #871
There is, just 12mm not 15mm...

This says 24h available...

Ooh.
I missed that as I looked at the SON 28.
The forks I'm looking at are 12mm... so that's me happy.

Few folk on the TCR facebook page talking about it.
edit: but apparently the issue was fixed in later releases.

I'm still thinking about getting another front wheel built with deeper carbon profile and normal QR skewer. Not sure if I should get a SON to be different or stick with SP?
Don't worry about it. I've commuted on different hub dynamo wheels and switched the lights on and off, I've never been able to tell the difference.
