  • Fat adaptation is a load of horseshit. Carbs are king.

I want to 'race' TABR and 'finish' TCR so I'm really only concerned about fitness for TABR and being able to ride at all for TCR. Oh my aching arse...

  • 180cm ish and 95-something definitely beats 97 at 'my ancestors were dutch' height.

I'm only drinking coffee today. Food can fuck off for a bit.

  • Yeah I don't think it's possible to race both. We'll for me anyway.

  • Have seen keto definitely works; well not really, no beer. Big at ACH and two have gone what you target ^ in about two month.

  • And 500g butter has 3500 calories. So you burn 75-74 when you keto and don't need food.

  • The pub after work had a very nice five points on Friday.

  • When you stop breaking yourself you probably could.

Mentally I almost certainly can't do both. I've raced Nat 12hr after Nat 24hr and struggled. It's doable but I won't be at peak. Just sleeping properly will take a week or two after TABR so that's going to fuck recovery. Plus there's the planning and stuff for TCR which I will probably wing because I can't invest the time in both. So I will have a sub-optimal route (same as last year) and just see what happens.

Anyone got details for getting back from the finish yet? Probably should book that sooner rather than later.

  • Might work for weight loss but not good for performance.

I still plan on being quick (for me) in shorter stuff. Don't want to be beaten at a sprint finish by a girl or anything ;)

  • I'm doing it currently for weight loss, but not sure if I will maintain it once I'm doing the longer stuff from April onwards.

  • I wouldn't race on any 'keto' or 'fat adaptation' diets. They just don't work when performance is required above and beyond the weight loss they might offer.

Most of the fat-adapted anecdotes are bullshit too - look at their diets and there's tonnes of carbs in them. Rice and a rugby team spring to mind.

  • Ha! That Jack K bloke is a fucking dude.

I kind of remember that interview... they were hanging out the side of a van and I was listening to psytrance at the time.

I don't remember yelling at any dogs during any interviews but I was pretty tired most of the time.

    I sound funny.

  • keto' or 'fat adaptation' diets.

I know little about it but keep meaning to look into it. Didn't Josh ibbet do it the year he won TCR? And Juliana Buhring is into it.
Based on zero knowledge, I sort of feel it might work better for ultra endurance rather than for explosive / high speed stuff.
If you do it, you can't drink beer so it's a bit extreme.

  • I dont see how you can ride without carbs. I live on carbs and need them.
TCR is a goal next year. This year LEL I will work up from there.

  • Jack Keevill is fat.

  • "That said, I did experiment with carbohydrates a little. I taught my body to burn fat even when carbs weren't readily available"

He seemed to eat a lot of pastries.

Thing is, your body is burning fat most of the time anyway. Fat-adapted or not. If you take my blood values when I was tested back when I was having DVT issues I was considered to be very efficient fat burner even though I raced and trained entirely on carbs.

Have a look at Louise Burke's research:
    http://www.ausport.gov.au/ais/nutrition/research/fat_adaptation
    http://jap.physiology.org/content/jap/100/1/7.full.pdf

  • Noakes is a nutcase.

This is basically what I've been doing the last few years:
"Many sports nutritionists have turned to an alternate approach dubbed “train low, race high.” They suggest triggering fat adaptation by eating a conventional high-carb diet but performing certain training sessions in a low-carb state: a hard run first thing in the morning before breakfast, or two workouts in one day without replenishing carb stores in between. These targeted sessions, Burke says, are enough to boost the body’s fat-burning ability without compromising carb burning, giving the athlete “metabolic flexibility” to tap into whatever fuel they need in a given situation."

  • Interesting...

  • Sounds legit.

I have "metabolic flexibility" depending whats on tap ;)

  • I need to be very careful in the US with all their craft breweries. I can see myself missing the start..

  • Do a @skinny .. although he slightly miscalculated and gave Kristen too much of a head start.

  • DIPA power!

    hiccup

  • I wouldn't advise it. It's sub optimum!

  • Is a 600k audax (with a fair whack of climbing) a silly idea at the start of July if I'm racing starting the 28th?

  • Depends who you ask.
I think it's a good idea. But sleep 5-6h. It'll be a good run out, 2 200mile back to back days on sub optimum sleep.
Take a few days off after to recover.
