So many questions before you can answer that one but here are two simple ones:

Why do you need a car?
What's your budget?

Not for me, for parents, a low emission cars (not diesel, tax free) with decent MPG that gonna get run maybe 1,000 miles a years average.

The Prius is also fairly big for adults to sit comfortably in the back.

Hire car would be cheaper.

Get one with warranty especially covering the battery.
