Thanks chaps, yes it does appear to be original and looks like it has been well looked after in its earlier life.
There is a frame number, 2970 stamped on the underneath of the bb shell which may give a better indicator of age plus a gear cable pully and grease nipple on top of the shell where the bottom of the seat tube joins.
