  • i think they have local armouries where national service weapons are stored for use incase they get invaded by Italy or Luxembourg-it's not like they all have M16s hanging next to the cuckoo clock, although I think private ownership of weapons is still very much legal too.

  • Unless it has recently changed, reservists keep their weapons at home.

  • It has recently changed. They stopped giving people ammunition in 2007.

However, when you leave the army you have the right to keep your firearm on the condition that you meet gun license conditions.

  • I like how the Japanese police deal with individuals

"What most Japanese police will do is get huge futons and essentially roll up a person who is being violent or drunk into a little burrito and carry them back to the station to calm them down."

  • Yup; loved that bit. Great image.

  • In December 2007, the Swiss Federal Council decided that the
distribution of ammunition to soldiers would stop and that previously
issued ammo would be returned. By March 2011, more than 99% of the
ammo has been received. Only 2,000 specialist militia members (who
protect airports and other sites of particular sensitivity) are
permitted to keep their military-issued ammunition at home. The rest
of the militia get their ammunition from their military armory in the
    event of an emergency.[9][15][16]

The government sponsors training with rifles and shooting in
competitions for interested adolescents, both male and female. The
sale of ammunition – including Gw Pat.90 rounds for army-issue assault
rifles – is subsidized by the Swiss government and made available at
the many Federal Council licensed shooting ranges. That ammunition
sold at ranges must be immediately used there under supervision (Art.
    16 WG).

Just Wiki'd it: they can keep weapons at home but not ammo

  • So disable the transport system before you invade.

  • Funny you should say that. At one point all bridges and tunnels in Switzerland were rigged with demolition charges to be used in case of invasion. Their defensive strategy relied on an invading army not being able to get around the country.

They only removed the last charges in 2014!

You'll have to go a long way to find a more paranoid country than Switzerland.

  • Didn't you live there at one point or am I confusing you with somebody else?

  • Actually, according to the Telegraph the Swiss only removed explosives from tunnels and bridges on the German border and have retained the demolition charges on all other bridges and tunnels. Crazy shit.

  • "If anyone's going to blow up our country, it's going to be us!"

  • The Japanese futon burrito thing made me lol.

  • That and their national defence strategy is to run to the Alps and fight a guerilla war. Scared Hitler into leaving them alone so must be effective.

  • I lived in Zurich for a year in the late 90s.

  • That's a Swiss myth. They were busy arming the Nazis, made no sense for Hitler to invade.

  • Swiss myth

    christ im bored.

  • I lol'd if it's any consolation.

  • it is.

    and thanks.

  • I'm repeating everything to myself in a Chris Eubank voice now.

    FFT.

  • Shooting in Florida, five dead in an airport.

The gunman was an Iraq war veteran who had apparently been to the FBI to report that he was having disturbing thoughts and hearing voices telling him to join ISIS.

Nevertheless, he was allowed to fly with a handgun in his hold luggage.

I suppose the need to raise a well-regulated militia against government tyranny is just more important than those five lives.

  • Luckily he was mentally disturbed so it was the health system that let him down rather than the legal position re firearms.
