Ahah spring on there, instead of somewhere else.

Ugly but not a bad idea, MTB forks usually need maintenance and this cuts that out.

I've heard an issue with these is that they also bend side to side a bit too (as well as up and down) so they make the steering feel really sloppy

Oooh yes do not want. If the idea works it may be nice though :)

These days most bicycles seem to have much more than 60mm travel for reasons I don't understand cos I don't MTB (yet, building up a 1999 Cannondale F1000 but elastomer is gone, waiting for replacement and yes it only has 60mm travel)
