cheers all. I think I'll try and use the Sansui, now I have a house and all. if I fail it's good to know there's people who'd give it a home :)
about that FM dial - any ideas what it might be and is it DIY fixable? you had to turn it a certain way to get it to move the tuner thing. -
• #3654
totally agree with this, btw. if you can accommodate floorstanders, there are some bargains out there.

I inherited some Ruark Sabre speakers (manufactured 1995) and looking to pair with a replacement amp after my last one died. I've been told that amp and speakers need to be 'matched' but can't find much by way of specs for the Ruarks.
Any experts here think a Tangent Audio Ampster would be suitable?
https://tangent-audio.com/products/9-electronics/67-tangent-ampster-bt/It's going to £150 and I've got a £70 amazon voucher to stick towards it.
For use in a small kitchen/living room.
Will plug a TV into it, mainly streaming DAB radio and streaming songs from iPhones etc. Seems to fit the bill. Great reviews. Simple.
2x 50 wattsThanks

how much do want to spend?
there aren't many brands that a) are on the money with every model; b) abundant 2nd hand; and c) cheap. you need to keep looking and then have a quick search. brit 70s/80s manufactures are normally good - royd, ruark, castle, proac etc
i don't have a massive amount of experience with them, i've just done the standard ebay hit and hope with probably 6 sets to get the pair i like. only really lost money once.

If I start looking on ebay
How big is the room you're putting them in? Your bedroom you said, right?
If it isn't huge and you're going to be limited in placement I wouldn't overthink it.
The Eltax ones I said me and my mates all had were these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eltax-Monitor-III-Stereo-Speakers-Given-5-Stars-by-What-Hi-Fi-/142230768942?hash=item211d9d4d2e:g:11oAAOSw2xRYaTIACompleted listings suggest they should be £20-40.
Richer Sounds used to sell tonnes of these little JBL bookshelf speakers which I remember being decent enough, so I'm sure they'd be cheap.
I'm sure you could find some amazing floor standing speakers that would be better, but unless you're pairing with all the right stuff you won't get max performance.
I'd just start a search with geographic location and end date. The a bit of what hi-fi searching to check they're ok.
If it's part of a bigger set up, then ignore all that ^ .

For the time being its just to get some full range sound in my room. I want seamless music around the house. Obviously the same setup around my home would be good, but i just want cheap and cheerful for now. Most of the bass and staging and sound should be in the living room, followed by my room. Ill then probably use the silly cubes in the kitchen or perhaps the shed.

My TDL RTL2s are great and I got them for £40 from eBay. The newer TDLs (Studio 5 etc) are apparently crap, but the rest of the RTL range are supposed to be good, my mate got the RTL3s after hearing my 2s and he loves them - I think he paid about £75. They're massive, but the 2s are quite skinny.
I've heard good things about Rega Ela speakers as well, but I've not had a chance to listen to them. Don't really know much else, although my Sony Brooklands ones were apparently made by TDL for Sony and sound very nice too (£20 from eBay).

I've always enjoyed my Signet SL 260 pair, they made a larger 280 also.
Not sure what is available out there second hand, but these (rather deep) bookshelf speakers would be worth it. -

That sansui is luuurvly keep it 👍 for the tuner does it get signal just not tune ? Could just be the string needs to be restrung.

Sounds like a mechanical issue. Might be worn splines where the knob engages the shaft? A blob of glue or rizla shim or something might sort it?
If it's intermittent connection/signal, it's worth a squirt/turn with contact cleaner spray. -

cool, will have a play when I clean the kitchen grime off it...

I'm just checking here - this is junk right? Could only find rather down reviews online, and I assume it's just not the sort of tech anyone wants...
Edit: sorry that should probably be in AQA..

Those Q Acoustics are a bargain CB. I have the 20201's and they're great.

So I have just plugged my new old Eltax monitors that I won at £18 and they're in amazing nick.
They are great. They're missing the heavy oomph on the low end but for £18 they're absolutely stunning.
Is there a way to artificially accentuate the low end? Will speaker stands help?
I've realised I now need a bigger amp as the little SMSL is about 20w rms lower. Never ending!
