  • I have one of those ports on my Talbot roadie for when/if Shimano ever go wireless.

  • Shimano will never go wireless. SRAM hold the patent for a wireless control systems and I can't see them licensing ..

  • Challenge accepted!

I'll see what I can do with Campagnolo Potzena and BB7 SL.

You may very well be correct, it's a nice challenge to do.

TRP do work, Jan Heine have those on his Firefly but not 100% happy tho.

  • @Oswald please elaborate?

  • I'm sure Shimano have a whole stack of patents that SRAM would love to access, so some kind of patent licensee agreement between them is highly likely, if it doesn't exist already.

  • Has this been resolved yet?

  • Has cervelo c5 been bought yet?

    Ftfy

  • It's usual forum business. Person is being advice contrary to what they wish.

  • Take a look here ..

    https://www.bikerumor.com/2014/05/13/sram-electronic-drivetrain-patents-show-wireless-road-mountain-bike-designs/

On the flip side .. Shimano also have some strategic patents regarding electronic shifting components Eg. Shimano have a patent on using a plug going into an electronic actuator mechanism ..

Anyway let's not derail the bosses thread ..

  • @Oswald I did read that, but if Shimano use a different tech (say, magnets) they could still bring a wireless DI2.

Anyway. Boss bike will not feature batteries...

  • Total loss system with a dynamo?

  • Custom foffa with campag?

  • I'm going to try out a Di2 system to see if I really do hate Shimano as much as I recall hating Shimano.

  • Hope it works for you.

  • Don't make your mind just yet ..

ST-R9120 is hydraulic mechanical; more here: https://www.bikerumor.com/2016/08/17/shimano-previews-new-r9100-dura-ace-pricing/

  • I had an ogle at a 622 SLX in Sigma Sport on Saturday; lawdy they are nice but I'd have to ask for one with no logos on it.

  • You can get them with no logos at all, just a nice Ti head badge.

  • The Shimano I've loathed in the past have all had hoods that were similar to the SR-R9120 above... huge ugly hoods that were uncomfortable and spewed cables over the space between the bars.

The ST-R9100 was what I saw yesterday when browsing and were the first that made me think that perhaps they have produced a more comfortable and tidy hood.

If I do go Shimano it will be with hydraulic brakes, and if I can be convinced that the batteries on Di2 last long enough to never be an issue (and are OK with cold morning starts bikepacking without losing too significant an amount of capacity) then I'll consider that seriously.

But it's all down to the hoods. I've always been most obsessed with bike fit and comfort, and aside from the geometry and handling this means contact points... saddle, pedals, bars and levers/hoods. The rest I've got under control, but the lack of Campag disc brake really is screwing with settling on a build.

  • Sounds like you are talking about the old 7800 hoods if they had external cables.

The newer ones are much slimmer and nicer. The di2 ones even more so.

  • Yeah new Shimano is loads better than old. Hydro is still pretty bulky though.

  • If you are all for Di2 then its great news because they've minimised the difference between hydro and non-hydro if you look at 9170 and 9150 vs current R785 and 9070.

  • I charged my Di2 battery once last year. Just under 9000km of use.
The Di2 Hydro hoods are a lot less bulky than mechanical as they dont have to house all the mechanical shifting elements.... It sounds like your opinions of Shimano are based on the now pretty dated stuff!

  • Here are the new Di2 hydro shifters on a bike:

Much less bulky than the current version.

  • "a bike". Sure.

  • Velocio is gonna love that headtube.
