  • i dont see why not. It is audiophile stuff... I used to love car sound. Probably because I love bass

  • Aight cool!

Got a new car over Christmas, and it's got a locked stereo. I could get the code, but it's a pretty old car (2006) and thought I'd use the opportunity to get something better.

I'm so out of touch because I've not owned a car in so long, but I'm after something that plays radio (preferably DAB?), CDs, and can play audio that I stream off Spotify off my phone. The ability to charge my phone through USB would also be a must.

Is this feature set available? I'm a bit baffled by the options. Audio quality is probably going to have to take a back seat (HAHAHAHA like a car's back seat!) because I'm not installing new speakers everywhere.

  • I would try to drop CD's from that list, it's not that popular and will limit your choices. Get a decent bluetooth (ver 4.0) capable head unit with DAB (and a DAB aerial). Probably add a mic for telephone conversations. Some of the early units are a bit dodgy on bluetooth so try to avoid getting one of the bay without checking it has recent bluetooth compatibility.

  • Denon sc m70 anyone know anything about them ? no joy online not even a review, seen a pair second hand for £25 in good nick. may do as a starter as my budget is low,

    6-ohm, Max Input Power : 80-Watt

  • Like these?

look decent - some Denon speakers were made by Mission; generally they were good value.

I'd say worth a punt at £25, if everything works.

  • exactly them, dont know why there is little info on them, will go back monday to see if they are still there. they are a little scuffed on the outside but checked under the grill and the connections were all pristine. ta

  • Certainly look decent. I wouldn't pay more than £50 judging by looks alone.

I wondered if one of the woofers was actually a dummy, used as a resonator (done on fancier speaker designs) but this is unlikely as its ported on the front which means that it would operate in the conventional way. Still, in theory they should sound bigger than they look. And size matters when buying speakers.

  • yeah the price is what caught me 25 notes, they are all clean under the grill, the flat is tiny so they will be fine for a bit of music and radio listening.

  • I'm after a budget solution for streaming music and also attaching a turntable. What is there?
I've got some old speakers that I could use but would also consider something with active speakers.

  • An old decent amp for c.£100, a Google Chromecast audio, and your turntable of choice?

  • Cheers. I actually just found the aux in port (down by the gearstick(!)) so I think I'll stick with what I've got for now, and get a dual USB charger to bung in the fag socket. Saves me a bit of hassle.

  • I'd go with @fizzy.bleach 's suggestion. An old silverfaced, Japanese amp with a built in riaa, a turntable of similar vintage (or something like a entry level Pro-Ject) and a pair of matching speakers. I picked up a Pioneer SA-7500 for £10 and a pair of Scan Dyna A30's for £12 at the local charity shop. Chromecasts are ~£15 from Currys from time to time.

  • Yep, except the silver jap amps are no longer the bargains they were. Look for a good black Denon/marantz/pioneer and some mission 780/etc. Chrome cast and a rega.

  • I love a great sounding boot sale setup that has been put together for peanuts.

  • Further to and direct contradiction to my points upthread about cheap studio monitors vs hi fi speakers, I've started to think that these Celestions would make great monitors for the kind of music I make... they are fucking amazing. It would mean my Adam A5x's would be up for grabs if anyone fancies them?

  • Yesterday went for a walk around Apliu street (electronics steet) in HK. there were vintage amps a plenty but no bargains, all at going rate really but was great to see so many, Sansui, pioneer, kenwood, luxman, Marantz all stacked up on top of each other and shrink wrapped in plastic, asked the prices of a few that thought may be in my range but was over top even with the two a fro of haggling down. :( My phone died so no pics. but may go back up this week, if you have a budget to spend you could come away with some really nice bits. CSB

  • Cross post sales spam but I have an airport express going spare for all your audio streaming needs. £20.

  • Probable dibs if you don't mind posting to sweden? Also, what generation?

  • Wanted a mini amp. Realised I still have 400 CDs (how, WHY?) , Now thinking min hifi and dab.
    Demon? Anything else?
(Task rabbit to rip CDs to a drive?)

  • Any recommendations for a bluetooth receiver to hook up to a hi-fi (i.e. mains powered). Apt-X, ability to connect to a couple of devices simultaneously and optical out would all be a bonus.

  • Wireless bedroom speaker system....

I wanted to stream music via WiFi on an open platform so I bought the Pure Jongo. The main reason for getting the Jongo was the open platform to use any app and connect from any device.

I was hoping to be able to play music on my xbox and in my room at the same time.

I have a mini amp powering 2 mini speakers.

Well, the Jongo thing doesn't cast connect to the xbox. Hell, I'd be ok if I could cast to both my xbox and the Jongo from my laptop.

But the Jongo has an app that doesn't work properly. Windows has an app but that doesn't work properly either. There's one 3rd prop app, which doesn't work properly.

The WiFi crashes constantly. And keeps forcing the Bluetooth, which I can't stand.

Anyone have experience with the Chromecast? Is it as much of a pain as the Jongo?

  • I'm so glad I still play vinyl. :)
When did playing music become so complicated? I'm so out of touch! :o

  • ^ Ive got over 1000 lp's in the garage, may have to dig them out

  • @chalfie have you got a laptop with a CD drive? Just sit with a stack of them to rip whenever you are in front of the Tele or similar. You'll soon get through them. Set the ripper to auto eject and auto rip on insert. Mindless, simple. BITD when I did this with nearly a thousand CDs, I used iTunes. Not sure of the best software option now.

I have a USB drive if you want to borrow?
