  • It's normal for a bored or distressed dog. If they've left it outside and gone out, they might not know it's been barking all day. You could knock on the door or leave a note to let them know, they might thank you. When I got Herbie and first started leaving him for any length of time, I asked my next door neighbour to tell me if he barked and bought her a plant and a bottle of wine for her trouble. He never did, apparently.

If they're in, shouting "shut that fucking dog up" out the window might embarrass them into action. Worked for someone round here.

  • The dog continued barking until about 30 seconds ago, when it sounded like it was being attacked, now its gone silent.

  • There was one near here this summer that started barking a lot. One day, when it was really hot, it went on all morning so I wandered round there to see exactly where it was coming from. The dog was on a second floor balcony, the balcony door open, and was barking at every bird that flew past and anything else that took its fancy. I would guess the owners were out.
Since then it has stopped; possibly people in neighboring flats had finally had enough of it and told the owners.

  • Our cat was given six months to a year to live 4 years ago. He's got heart disease and at the time had a heart scan and blood tests before being prescribed two drugs (furosemide and fortekor). These have done the job and he's still a healthy cat who plays, eats well and who's condition has not degraded significantly. On occasion we've gone away and left him with friends who haven't managed to get him to swallow the pills as successfully and it's obvious the drugs are having a positive effect.

To cut to the chase our vet is now holding back his prescription unless he has a £500 heart scan. Is this on? Given the regular blood tests, our monitoring of his breathing and the fact he's far out lived his original assessment it seems alot of money to put him through a great deal of stress.

  • Vet tried that on with our family dog who also had heart issues, always trying to get him in for checkups on a 17 year old dog that was doing absolutely fine.. for a 17 year old dog. Not quite £500 but it got very frustrating in the end.

    Threaten to switch vets?

  • That sounds pretty shitty tbh.

I would think that for the scan they would have to sedate the cat (likely a large proportion of the cost)
This carries (not insignificant) risk. I would counter that you do not feel comfortable with the risks involved, especially given the lack of any signs of worsening condition.

I am not a vet however.

  • Switch.

    Vets.

  • Following up on my post from the last page regarding my neighbours Akita. My partner contacted the Akita rescue guys and they were very helpful, have come to see the dog and are happy to rehome him if Ruben decides he's ready to do that.

So thanks to those of you who recommended them, we were under the impression that they wouldn't take him but going back to them and looking at the situation carefully they were able to help.

When they visited they gave a lot of good advice and reassured Ruben that he's doing very well with him anyway so he may not rehome him after all!

  • great news!

  • A week after she came into my partner's practice as a smelly, unloved ex-gypsy stray, Holly is now a thing:

  • So Lily the greyhound came into our lives a month ago. She is so lovely, gentle, intelligent and just brilliant. As a rescue greyhound she has to wear a muzzle for 2months, part of the rescue agreement to avoid any issues with very small furries. She's met so many cats and squirrels and has been fine. It's breaking my heart that so many people we meet in our local parks think it's because she bites :(

  • Ex-racer?

  • Yup. Don't worry we're keeping her muzzled, but sad people think it's because she bites..

  • Great to see more sighthounds on the forum @umop3pisdn and @zeez !

Awaiting photos of them on sofas on their backs with their legs in the air aka "roaching"

Our two ex racing greyhounds are now 11 and 12 and starting to show it... Caleb has a shaky rear leg and has had an eye out, Milly has a heart murmur and got her tail shut in a door removing all the skin from about 2inches of it.. healing up now though.

Pet insurance is highly recommended! (Probably not in your case though @umop3pisdn )

Worked out the other day we must have spent around 20k on vets bills over the past 7 years... Thankfully mostly covered by insurance.

  • What, like this?

  • Paint me like one of your French poodles.

  • Yup :)
