  • It'll just need the spark plug gapping, 10 mins work.

Either that or the piston is holed and you need a new engine.

  • I'm going to say coil breakdown.

When have anyone gapped a modern plug?

  • It'll be the points.

  • Just popped the cover off and looked at the coil packs. The #2 coil appears to be new, at least compared to the others. I'll have to check if it was replaced at the last service (august).

I'll wait until the engine cools down and then try popping it out and reseating it, but it looks to be in properly. Apart from that, I think I'm out of my depth...

  • Dora is now finished, freshly MOT'd etc, and officially up for sale, after a full restoration, including full professional engine rebuild (re-bored +20 pistons, crank ground, new head fitted fully re-conditioned injector pump and injectors etc), gearbox professionally rebuilt, Diffs changed for Range Rover ratios, increasing final drive ratio, meaning she comfortably cruises at 60mph. Chassis has been stripped, had some minor welding work done, and painted+clear waxoyl'd. All the body work has had a re-spray, and all the galvanising has been stripped and re hot-dipped. New galvanized front bumper, new sound deadening and carpets fitted up front, and checker-plate in the back. all new light lenses and new, uprated headlights. Everything fully re-wired and working perfectly. New custom made aluminium dash panel. etc etc...

Basically it's like a brand new, 1972, short-wheelbase series 3 land rover, which should be good for another 45 years of driving! My question is- How much should I advertise her for? I've been recommended a guide price of about £11,000 but I've seen cars in similar condition advertised and selling for closer to £15,000. Does anyone on here have any ideas, or experience from selling older land-rovers/ older cars in general?

Also: might anybody on here be interested, or know someone who may be interested, in purchasing such a vehicle?

  • That's beautiful. Just out of interest: why didn't you galvanise the chassis?

  • It's much more difficult to galvanize an old chassis than a brand new one, and, basically, if you're going to do that, you might as well buy a brand new galvanized chassis for £3000, which the budget didn't allow for. as the chassis was sound, I decided to spend the money making a really thorough job of all the mechanical stuff. This chassis is in good shape, and paint and waxoyl are a very protective finish, they just require a bit more upkeep (an hour or so each autumn, adding a bit more waxoyl where necessary.

  • Fair enough. It looks very well done. It's just the sort of thing I'd love to buy and cart mountain bikes about in. Can't afford it not justify having it, sadly.

  • Just been watching White Rabbit Project.

There's an old Mustang that have been converted to electric which does 0-60 in less than 2 second.

    Christ.

  • Finished- two missing bits in the rhs light assembly and a scattering of spares.

  • It looks like it's already been rolled at the Nordschleife.

  • What on earth made you think that?

  • Fox?

I'd price high, as it nice and shiny and sure some London hipster will buy it.

  • I think Londoners want Defenders thatve been totally ruined with alloy wheels, tinted windows and an all-over graphite paint job.

That Series deserves to stink of labradors and have a muddy mountain bike hanging out the back.

  • Why does it have a series 2 bonnet?

  • Take the coil pack and swap it to a different cylinder, reset the code and take it for a drive, if the fault moves with the coil then it's at fault. If this is the same as the 8L S3 engine then there coil packs should be replace with newer items from a golf Gti. The uprated ones are red coils I think.

  • Is it just the angle from which the photos were taken,
it looks like the tyres on both axles are too far forward,
and with even modest articulation will hit the wings.

(I know nothing about Land Rovers).

  • Not sure if it's the same, it's an AUQ engine. There was a coil pack recall before I owned the car, not sure if the previous owner ever took it in. I'll see whether skoda will still honour that...

Good thinking to swap them around, I'll see if that sorts it. I read somewhere that driving it with a misfire will knacker the cat. Will short distance be a problem?

  • @Dammit 's Porsche not the Land Rover.

  • Advice.

Second hand Prius, worth it or better off just getting something like a Yaris?

  • Impressed by your attention to detail! It's one of the very first series 3's, from January 1972. They came with the 'razor edge' bonnet until slightly later, when the rounded edge version was introduced.

edit: Here's a picture of another example, but Only the very early ones had it, so it's actually quite rare!

  • I know what you mean, and they do sit towards the front of the wheelarches, although this is exagerated by the narrow track of the vehicle, and the angle of the pictures.
...but I assure you that the axles and springs are mounted correctly! As the axles articulate, they move up and back.

edit: in this photo, taken with a longer lens, the perspective distortion is less, so they look a bit more normal:

  • Aaah,
so the tyres sit inside the arches?
I'm certain the LR afficionadoes who will be considering buying this vehicle will know the (leaf spring?) suspension allows the axles some rearward movement.

If you are looking for 'top dollar', I guess from being the third passenger in a LR a couple of times, you need to stress if the heating system has been upgraded/improved,
    and,
if you have upgraded the 'radio' to one with Bluetooth to allow easy connection to the ubiquitous iPhone.

  • Tbh if it's a slight, moving it won't solve the issue if it's the coil that's failed but it does mean you know exactly what's wrong and how to fix it.

  • Nah that is the charm, hence why my first landie was a Norwegian radio operators one.
