Take the coil pack and swap it to a different cylinder, reset the code and take it for a drive, if the fault moves with the coil then it's at fault. If this is the same as the 8L S3 engine then there coil packs should be replace with newer items from a golf Gti. The uprated ones are red coils I think.

Not sure if it's the same, it's an AUQ engine. There was a coil pack recall before I owned the car, not sure if the previous owner ever took it in. I'll see whether skoda will still honour that...
Good thinking to swap them around, I'll see if that sorts it. I read somewhere that driving it with a misfire will knacker the cat. Will short distance be a problem?

Right, swapped the coil packs from cylinder 1 and 2, cleared the code and now got a new code of p0301, so misfire on cylinder 1, suggesting it is a coil pack issue.
Checked the coil pack part numbers, looks like they are subject to the recall so I'll give the local skoda garage a shout tomorrow and see if I can get them to swap them out.
Just popped the cover off and looked at the coil packs. The #2 coil appears to be new, at least compared to the others. I'll have to check if it was replaced at the last service (august).
I'll wait until the engine cools down and then try popping it out and reseating it, but it looks to be in properly. Apart from that, I think I'm out of my depth...
