significant investment in the alternatives.
exactly what is needed, else car culture remains.

I think "the" solution is a more holistic change in how people view their lives. I've been quite heavily motivated by this article in the newyorker took me to mr money mustache's blog
Good link, thanks

Fuck me. That's actually a real headline. Also, there's someone called Bingo Gubelmann in real life.
-
• #43806
It would have been much better if he was called 'Bingo Gambleman'. :)

There already seem to have been three fairly major fires in London this year:
-
• #43808
My local fireman reckons that fire deaths are going up and will continue to go up as fire stations are shut, because whatever the claims, appliances just cannot get through London traffic in the required time.
-
• #43809
was that a not so subtle dig by your firemanman at csh infrastructure causing teh traffics?
-
• #43810
Response times have gone through the roof... Traffic's always been bad, shutting fire stations to 'save money' was Boris bollocks, the saving was negligible... Londoners put in harm's way for no particular reason, I still haven't figured out what the political gain was... Apart from selling off heritage fire stations and turning them into a Leon with flats upstairs...

I'm told a huge offer has been made for the West Hampstead fire station, and hope that it is rejected, not only because living almost next to it makes my house very unlikely to burn down, but also because the place has hardly changed since the day it was built. It should remain as it is:

That'd make a good location for a nightclub

• #43814
Or a fire station themed pub... With live music, obvs...

I got very badly hammered in there once. At lunchtime. On a school day.

When you quit politics you can claim on the IOUs that have been racked up.

Sort of news. Listening to this the other day. Examines our approach to the truth. Raised some interesting points imo.

Defiantly made me think I need to consider other opposing views.
-
• #43820
I consider any views opposing mine defiantly.
-
• #43821
HA!
I always struggle with that word.
-
• #43822
I've always found it odd that auto-correct seems to choose 'defiantly' over 'definitely', as the latter is far more commonly used.

The machines fighting back!

They're definitely defiant.

The following is probably only a pearoast of what I've said in this thread earlier, but a commendable wish to consider the opposite view is too easy to exploit by any news franchise that have a ruthless billionaire owner or autocratic president they need to please.
Instead a debate with differing views on how, and to what extent, we are damaging the climate, we've had ten years of the news tricking people into thinking that someone saying "it's not happening at all" represents a valid opposite view to the scientific consensus.
Agreed, outside of London the options are often severely limited.
I was back up North at my parents over Christmas. Everything is either up or down a big hill, buses are pretty infrequent, trains are at best once an hour (and unreliable) and public transport really cuts down past 6pm, most journeys are more than a couple of miles. There aren't many options other than driving without a significant investment in the alternatives.
