. . . And the focals I want are about two and a half grand a pair, so I definitely wouldn't compare them to each other. :)

I know the little Amptastic amps aren't exactly big money, but is there anything similar cheaper? Just looking to run a couple of small standmount speakers with chromecast so need to get them going with something.
And merry crimbo!

Look for one of the topping ta2020 t amps. The are on eBay occasionally.

Thanks, BRM. I've seen that name about whilst hunting around. Anyone here recommend them? Or is it a matter of you get what you pay for?

no exp here, just what I have read when looking for my amptastic. Buy one of the 30 quid jobs and see if you can live with it.

I have one of these : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311693323794
Very good, as long as your speakers are sensitive enough.
-
• #3508
Good point^ mine just goes loud enough for normal listening out of 89db speakers
-
• #3509
Any point even trying with a pair of 93db tannoy reveals?
-
• #3510
Yes, definitely. They will be fine.
-
• #3511
Yes very much, 20w is plenty at that sensitivity (unless you have a huge room to fill)
-

Oh, if you're getting rid of them, let me know. I really really really want the g3 6s but if you're selling yours at a very good price, I may be interested.

I'm picking up a pair of Samson SR850's from the post office today. Needed something for post child bedtime listening and the reviews sounded pretty good, especially considering the price: £28.45!

Single Bluetooth speaker for kitchen duty circa £200.
Priority is sound quality.
So far, I've looked at the UE Megaboom and some Bose shit. Neither exactly exude what I'd call flat. -

This is going to end up being a multi room sonos set up, isn't it.

I got a Sonos play1 free with a new internet contract and it's amazing. seriously impressive for its size
. Going to buy another as soon as post Xmas funds allow. The thing I don't like about Sonos is how expensive the 'connect' speakerless streamer is. Everything else is way better than the old airport express/iTunes setup I have.

Yeah but it ain't Bluetooth so I can't use it for YouTube while cooking...

If it had a line input that would be a work around.

Minirig for portable. Otherwise a mini-amp, speakers and bluetooth receiver.

Don't understand why ppl are endorsing using studio nearfield monitors for recreational listening. Agree that the KRK's are not great, Genelec 8030s might not be a terrible shout as I find them quite flattering but the top of the range Focsal stuff is just not what I'd choose for listening enjoyment. I recently mixed on some and although the detail is fantastic they don't sound "great". They're great at revealing faults in a mix and if you can get something sounding good on them it will sound killer on a good stereo. Used as stereo speakers though they will have the effect of revealing every flaw, niggle and quirk in all but the most immaculately produced record. They don't have huge bass extension and the lack of mid-scoop/near total linear frequency response that makes them such great monitors makes tracks played back sound kind of boxy and midrange focussed in comparison to almost any half decent stereo. That's why I use (Adam A5x) monitors for mixing and playback for pleasure on nice stereo kit.

Ah! I thought it was

Loads of "hifi" 'speakers are or have their roots in studio monitors; Rogers, Tannoy, PMC, JBL etc.
All different - depends what you want.

I can't speak for others, but I was talking about their use for studio rather than straight up listening pleasure. I also wouldn't recommend proper studio monitors for regular home listening.
I didn't compare the two.
I merely pointed out that in my opinion the krk's are way too muddy at the bottom end for my taste, no matter their price point.
