Bike shed/workshop + woodcarving projects

  • I've read through this thread several times all the way through over the last 2 years, and still jealous! I'm moving house and with a nice spacious garage/workshop, if I am able to make a bike workspace half as nice as yours, I'll be thrilled.

  • Update?

  • It's very untidy and I just had a half hour nap down there.

  • Your day > my day

  • I'm living #tiredlife. Need to retire. Only ~40 years to go.

  • Bit of a miserable day today, so I'm going to shut myself away and build some new wheels.

  • Your day > my day

  • job site radio = hard man

  • Ohh wheel building skills...do your talents know no end?

  • do your talents know no end?

You've seen me trying to ride a bike, yes?

  • You've seen me trying to ride a bike, yes?

Oh yes a master descender of hills.
I'm just buttering you up for when I want a new set of wheels.....

  • Been ages since I've done a full wheel. Looking forward to doing my 650Bs. My truing stand isn't half as nice though

  • Generally if my bikes work, I have no interest in mechanical/fettling side of things but wheel building/trueing is one that I would like to be able to do well.

  • I'm the opposite: I refuse to let a bike shop do anything on my bike. But wheels is a real skill and I'm happy to let someone else do that for me.

  • I don't really 'get' mechanical stuff (must be the odd one out as my granddad was an engineer, my dad always worked in mechanical jobs and my brother does car bodywork restoration). Squealing canti's have induced epic swearing bouts and severe violence to inanimate objects in my shed - I mentioned them to Matt at the Dandy Horse one day and he sorted them in 5 seconds. Fuuuuuu..

I can probably get them done for you by Summer 2026?

  • Fine. That's about the time it would take me to put the rest of the bike together.

  • I guess this qualifies as a shed update.

The workshop was originally meant to be a place where I could do all sorts, but mainly I wanted a place to do some woodcarving. The carving vise I bought about six years ago has finally come out of its box.

  • Looks like an aerial for communication with the Soviets to me. And a mahogany sex toy. But I suppose this qualifies as 'all sorts' ;)

  • i want a space for carving

  • Finally used the shed to carve something.

  • That's really impressive.
    What wood is it?

  • Thanks, it's cherry

Darkened slightly by several coats of danish oil and then a coat of paste wax
