Interesting @pifko you mention moving from tri -> run club. Considered similar move but I like current club & still unlikely to do many social / group training runs unless they're on the doorstep and at convenient times so staying put.
It's more expensive being part of 2 clubs instead of just 1, but the club is based at the athletics track, a 2min jog from my house, so it's super convenient for me :)

That'll defo work well for you. I'd be one or other not both. Current club is £35 + affiliation + £4 per (venue based) session (I mostly train solo now on local trails plus commutes). Alternative is also £50 (pretty sure that includes ea affiliation too) with track sessions less than 1 mile away but they're aimed at the mid-distance speedy folks. Sessions suitable for me would be at different venue 4 miles away.
Anyway, /csb, writing it down helps me think it through. Too many ()'s sorry.

2016? First year running regularly... To my amazement, started to actually enjoy it! Ran a 10k in under 50min at the start of the year.... Started Parkrunning regularly and got down to 20:04 - sub-20 very soon... Ran a few 20k+ and enjoyed them.... Started thinking that a marathon might be in my future... Injured back, haven't run for 3 weeks and lost running mojo :-( Now improving and planning to hit the streets again over the holiday.... 2017? Sub-20 5k, 45min 10k, 1/2 marathon + ???

Ah, I meant being a member of a running club and cycling club (for TT'ing) would be cheaper than just a Tri club. But yeah, hoping it'll work out nicely.

Not for me, for my gf. I assumed that it might exist in a similar way as fitting for cycling, is that not the case?

2016: Approaching 1,200 miles for the year. Did my first marathon in 4:00:38. My first sub 2 hour half marathon.
2017: A load of half marathons and 10k races to get some speed in my legs. 1:45 Half marathon is my main target. Attempt to convert my girlfriend to start running. Maybe Dingle marathon if I'm feeling strong. Try and be more social with my running, am quite insular.

Understood - full all sessions free membership of my tri club is over £200 so only worth it if hammering the swim coaching & track sessions. Glad they do the cheapo option too as could join 4 run or bike clubs for that cost!

2016 started off pretty shit, but did a lot of miles through the year, over a thousand for the third year running.
Done some new events (Calderdale, Greensands, Hodgson Bros, Cardington) as well as some old favourites and (so far) a full XC season! Running a lot more consistently, and a lot less solo and getting a lot quicker as a result.
2017 brings a few months of marathon prep, then some fell running and just maybe some long stuff for a laugh. I'd like to go 18 for 5K, 37 for 10, 1:22 for half and anything sub three for the marathon (aiming for GFA for 2018 London).
It's nice to be running decently again for one thing.

Out this morning for DPFR's annual Christmas Eve Breakfast Run. A record number of people out due to Christmas falling on a Sunday and lots of people finally not obliged to work to the bitter end.
The general premise of this run is you truck out of Sheffield up the Porter Brook until you run out of up, turn left and run down to Grindleford Station for a full English or variation thereof. No racing, no training, no heroics, just some good old fashioned socialable running for the sake of it. It was one of my favourite runs of the year followed by a free train back to the city centre and a few beers.
If you haven't managed to have a run for the hell of it with no aims and no flagelation, maybe see if you can fit one in during the last remaining week of the year. I reckon that would be a good goal.

Got a splashmap of the BGR for Christmas. I think it's a sign...

13k of biting winds up to 40mph and learning why lots of fell runners own calf guards for the Boxing Day Bogtrot. Also remember how much damage high stepping does to you. Found some great holes to fall into too.
Yeah, I really need to start improving my off road technique.

First run for 10 days as I've been sick. Actually the first time in over a week I've been on my feet, even walking, for more than half an hour. Flu ain't no fun.
Running today was slow but so nice :)

What's the deal with running when you're ill? I've had a cough for a few weeks and have run through it: should I not run at all?
-
• #14691
If it's above the neck, run but monitor, on the chest = rest.

Managed 19:43 for 5k this morning. Gonna be hard work maintaining that for 10... 😤

You have the speed, now to build the endurance, and endure the pain.

• #14695
So longer runs? More than 10k?

• #14696
That was recommended by a friend and is on my to-watch list.

It is a good one, enjoyed lots.

^ It's on Netflix I think, looks horrendous.
I started doing a really physical job about four months ago and completely binned off the running because I was just too knackered. Now it's nearly January and I've realised I've got London in April.
Need to get on a schedule rapidly

marathon training started today, 30 minutes tempo pace, following a slightly tri-arised version of Hal Higdons Advanced 2 plan ahead of London, as it basically followed what i was planning anyway, have shoe horned in a swim and a steady bike as well.

Managed just shy of 5km without all my leg muscles seizing up this morning. Will take that as a win.
Lots of long reads there, nice.
2016 I went further (almost 1400 miles apparently) and consequently a little bit slower but occasionally quick and at least my lung didn't deflate (so far, or that I noticed anyway).
2017 going far again plus usual Fell races, xc, parkrun etc as life allows.
Interesting @pifko you mention moving from tri -> run club. Considered similar move but I like current club & still unlikely to do many social / group training runs unless they're on the doorstep and at convenient times so staying put. Means no National XC participation again tho and that's a huge pull to change.
