  • Yeah, developers still need Macs to make stuff for iOS though, so even if the Mac does make up 10% of their profits, they need that to keep their product that makes 60% competitive.

Concurrent development of A/B models and waiting for Intel don't help either.

I do think they need a powerful, expandable box that isn't an iMac. The old Mac Pros sold well and were good value even compared to HPs and Dells. Universities had loads of them, companies had loads of them and more people had them at home than the trashcan.

Hopefully they haven't looked at the abysmal sales of the trashcan and gone "no one wants workstations anymore", ignoring (or forgetting) how popular the cheesegraters were.
Or maybe they're letting it languish because it didn't do well from the start and a redesign after a year would be like admitting it was a rubbish idea. Three years seems more acceptable for a radical change of form-factor and no-one would be to wedded to the outgoing one.

They must have considered merging the Mini & Pro.

  • That's a lot of political baggage for a computer to have. Especially now.

There's so much talk about those jobs but it's going to be 90% robots soon enough anyway so whats the point?

  • Machine arrived yesterday. It's beautiful!
There is the weird Siri graph glitch that everyone seems so worked up about, but apparently it's limited to Siri, which I don't use so I won't notice untill it's fixed in some MacOs update,

Only after initial set up with pass word, touch ID etc. it ocurred to me that now Apple and whoever they deal with have my fingerprint registered. :/

Time to use the holidays to gather programs, I'm considering looking at Affinity Photo and Designer. Any thoughts on those?

    What to do with Autocad?

  • I can see a time when what we now call an iPhone is able to double as a Desktop

Seems like that's what MS are doing to try and catch up on mobile.
Windows 10 coming back to ARM chips with full support, and same apps being developed on desktop, mobile and xbox.

Surface Phone might be interesting, or it could be as irrelevant as their last 5-10 years attempts at mobile.

  • Your fingerprint never leaves the machine. Interpol will not be able to link your crimes to you, you have nothing to worry about. Boring blurb here.

  • I see, Thanks. Hope it works, it feels kinda strange.

  • Aye, heard that too, found it very interesting, because if Windows do it and Apple also make the switch then Bootcamp will not be effected - which is a bonus.
I think Microsoft are doing a far better job atm at merging mobile/desktop.

  • So the insurance claim is almost there... now MBA 11in doesn't exist anymore, they might still be able to get me a NOS, which will be fine, but if they don't, the nearest option would be a base model MacBook or a 13in Air... what do I do? I will also be getting a replacement 15in, just don't know if they are gonna get me a custom like for like as Apple still sells it, or will they be kind and give me the 2016 model... I would happy happy with either... I just need to know what I want before tomorrow when they call back... I can try and get a 2016, but I feel like I'd be taking a piss due to the price difference...

  • Is there a way to just store my photos on iCloud and not locally? I'm not precious about 99% of them.

  • Also work got me a Dell XPS which I was really liking but it has now died twice in two weeks, meaning that I've lost 4 days work over that period (due to only saving locally). Is a Macbook a poor choice for a work laptop?

  • Aye, heard that too, found it very interesting, because if Windows do it and Apple also make the switch then Bootcamp will not be effected - which is a bonus.

Indeed. Had a go on a Dell 2-in-1 running Windows 10 in tablet mode and liked it.

My current computer is an 11" MacBook Air which cost £750 a couple of years back. Apple don't seem to offer a laptop in this size/price range anymore, I guess they want me to get an iPad instead.
However Microsoft seem to do the tablet/laptop thing better, I'll be looking long and hard at a Surface Pro when it comes time to replace my MacBook Air.

Hopefully Microsoft can nail the Surface Phone too and make Apple less complacent than they seem to be at the moment.

  • I have one of the retina Macbook. Great battery life & super portable.

Depends what you're doing but if you've got an external screen, then PowerPoint etc is more than fine.

  • Basic excel work, powerpoints, taking to meetings etc.

Lack of ports not an issue?

  • I managed six months before I needed to buy a usb c > hdmi/usb adapter. Love my little MacBook, have used it way more than I thought I would.

  • I use Affinity Designer, it's very good and somehow doesn't eat all your ram when you've got tonnes of things open. Although I'm a developer not a designer so don't do 'proper' design work. The best design program is Sketch.
Affinity Photo is meant to be very good too.

  • Not at all. There's potential for some file incompatibilities but as long as you use the same Microsoft Word/Excel etc as everyone else you'll be fine.

  • I bought a cheap all in one hub thing off of Amazon which has usb 3, sd card reader, usb c and hdmi.

  • Awesome thanks @Soul @6pt @Sumo

  • I ordered the apple own brand one. It appears from lots of the reviews that some of the other manufacturers ones are frequently faulty, and I need hdmi to work for doing presentations.

  • I just looked through my order history... Cost a little more than £20 but this is what I got:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01ANITHVQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  • That link is to something for £80.

Amazon links are a fucking lottery.

  • Wife is buying me the MacBook Pro for xmas hence the buying of leads.

  • I have the new MBP, my left hand wedding finger rests on (and activates) the OLED ESC key at all times, shit shit shit.

    Merry Christmas!

  • Were you not taught to touch type?
