I'm planning on getting a whole house streaming audio set-up.... originally looked at SONOS but £££££ so am now thinking of using a fleet of chromecast audio devices. I can utilise a few existing speakers but will need to get something new for a few rooms. Question to the audiophiles here - will I get better bang for my buck getting an amp/speaker combo or self-powered speakers? I'm looking on the budget side of the market. Any recommendations or good places online that are worth using for reviews etc?

^ Also want to know this. Plus, are there any cheapish active speakers that will take a digital input and turn on automatically when they start receiving a signal from the Chrome cast?

does depend a bit on what sort of thing you are after.
there are loads of bluetooth active speakers about now - like these:
http://www.richersounds.com/product/standmount-speakers/tibo/plus-2/tibo-plus-2
which have analogue and digital inputs as well as bluetooth. I dont know what they sound like but i imagine they will be ok.
If you are going second hand, then lots of options for good and cheap amps and speakers.
If you want something more purist then studio monitors would be an option - but more £:
price is for one...

I've just bought a Pure Jongo from Amazon to cast to.
And an active subwoofer with speaker outs and some satellite speakers.

Aren't studio monitors designed for close listening with minimal colour?
Not really meant for room filling. -

Any recommendation in London for hi fi repairs, I have a couple of turntables needing some love...
Reliable without being an audio guru with extortionate prices? -

"... what they do offer is impressively deep bass extension for a speaker in this category and, for want of a better word, vibe.“

I hate the KRK rokit 5 G3's...what they 'do offer' is a muddy as fuck bass sound in my opinion. Nowhere near tight enough for my taste.
I'm getting rid of mine. Really wasn't impressed.
My Genelecs will see me through until I get the funds together for some Focals! :) -

Focals being £650 vs the KRKs at £250?
.... Totally equal
Cool, man. I won't be back in the big house until new year.
