I'm coming to this thread late so I may be duplicating.
I use DMR V12's ( some magnesium ) on all my bikes from fixed to old sturmey archer. You can't fit restraps onto them but my feet have never slipped off. I ride mainly in DM's or Converse. The bearings never need changing even on second hand ones. I've only scrapped the floor cornering once and take care now.
