the result was loads of blurry red and mushy ghosted faces, which worked quite well in the context of it being halloween and zombies

with "diy" you mean you used normal film, spooled back into the canister backwards?
Have no access to a darkroom, but heard it's doable in a changing bag as well..
..seems like quite a faff though - any experience?
It's straightforward in a changing bag. I think I used a tape dispenser so I could stick the reversed film back onto the tongue of film sticking out as it is a bit less faff.
I took this with some Agfa vista 200 @ EI 100 on my Olympus XA2
