A Shimano one should work in theory (the old 5 arm one, Sora, Alfine, etc.).
Why on earth did they go 4 bolts in the new ranges, apart from proprietary considerations which makes them annoying more than anything else?
Lighter and stiffer, supposely, one less bolt to deal with.
Then in 2018, 3 bolt will be the next best thing, a la Rene Herse.
