• Hi All, first time poster, recommended posting here by a fellow mechanic.

I've come across a 1984 Raleigh Sirocco on one of my jobs at a housing agency. It's a competition standard racer frame in Reynolds 501 with Suntour and Weinmann components (full specs and catalogue).

It was due to go in the skip as it had been left without a front wheel by a former resident on an estate in Marylebone. In removing it, the idiot estate team bolt cropped one of the seat stays. Useless!

I couldn't let this beautiful vintage bike get skipped so i asked to buy it. I've since had the frame repaired by Cam at Romance Cycles in Lewisham with a new stay, keeping the original drop out:

Before returning to me to protect the bare frame, a basic primer coat has been put on:

The bike's been reassembled with a new period appropriate front wheel, and i've put a pair of cheap Conti 700 x 23 tyres on.

The reason I am posting this for sale or trade is because the frame is way too large for me. It's a 62cm, and i'm 180cm / 5' 10".

I'm looking either for a like-for-like barter / trade of frame and forks for a 56cm 501 frame of the same era (ideally the same frame), or i'm willing to part with the whole bike for £160 ONO*.

Condition wise, there's a bit of minor paintwork damage, some small rust patches on the chrome and pitting on the aluminium rear rim, and it definitely needs a check on the spoke tension. Apart from that it runs fine, has been serviced, and is only missing a recessed bolt for the rear brake.

If you want reassurance that i'm legit, you can find details on me at cyclelondon.org

  • Welcome to the forum. You might be a bit optimistic on your pricing for it being a 501 frame. These can go for under half your asking price on the Bay.

  • Hello James!

Good work on saving it from the skip, but I'm afraid you'd be doing well to recover the cost of (what I guess) you paid for the new stay.

PS Did the Wenlock survive? One of favourites when I was in London.

  • Cheers for the realistic advice, I don't normally go near road frames. Will revise expectations, but ideally I'm after a like for like trade first and foremost.

  • Yep, Wenlock going strong. Brilliant pub.
