A 2009 Greenpeace report found that the cattle sector in the Brazilian Amazon, supported by the international beef and leather trades, was responsible for about 80% of all deforestation in the region,[3] or about 14% of the world's total annual deforestation, making it the largest single driver of deforestation in the world.[4] According to a 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 70% of formerly forested land in the Amazon, and 91% of land deforested since 1970, is used for livestock pasture.[5][19]

Yeah, I clicked through. There are a lot of think tanks and other corrupt/biased orgs with undisclosed backers cited on Wikipedia too though.
-
• #55
Sorry for being a bit overdramatic, some people actually give a shit about other things around us, not just ourselves and feel they're doing (or helping) to do something about it... must remember that for next time!
-
• #56
Lucky I have my degree already and at least I'm citing something. I don't have time to dig out 50 years of research to win arguments on the 'net.
-

You have to watch out a little with deforestation arguments. While the rainforest is one thing, I think someone has worked out that the northern forests of Russia actually contribute to warming because their dark hue absorbs heat rather than reflect it. Their comparatively slow growth means they do not process as much CO2 and so are net contributors to warming.
This is not to say that chopping down rainforests is fine, it's more to just point out that this whole thing is really fooking complicated.

You should plant more beef seeds.
-
• #59
Those are for the OXO plant yeah?
-
• #60
Now you're just picking a particular forest that supports your argument.
Only "about 14% of the world's total annual deforestation" though.

• #61
FLOUNCE!
Seriously, how is this kind of response, in any way, constructive or helps encourage others to get people on board with your cause?
-
• #62
Well it is the second largest forest in the world... why wouldn't I?
-
• #63
It's not my cause, it should be everyones.
-
• #64
So you're leaving it to someone else to fix?
If you care about something, you should communicate that and try to be a force for change. If you're going to do that, do it effectively, otherwise you waste people's time and they just push back against a cause.

Not at all, I've been doing my part for the last 14 years by not eating meat, I support Greenpeace though donations and don't buy products with Palm Oil in them... I am trying to do my bit for the environment
-
• #67
OK, so you're not eating meat. But is your lifestyle sustainable? Are there other things you could, and should, be doing?
-
• #68
Because it's only 14% of the world's total and so far doesn't support your argument about deforestation being mostly due to animal farming.
-
• #69
Do you shun air travel? Cars? Do you use solar power instead of grid elec?
-
• #70
I don't drive a car, I recycle, I travel by plane like once a year... although being vegan, I do expel a certain amount of gas myself... I'd have to look into what more I could and can do.
-
• #71
I don't think veganism is about perfection. It's an attempt at a contribution towards positive change.
We can all do more

You're still missing the point. There's a difference between responsible consumerism and an active society. The latter is what will make a difference in the long run.

Soak beans overnight..

• #74
I'll try that one ;)

• #75
Would you consider yourself an activist?
Whoa, hold on there a moment. You've said it's not a wank idea but immediately reparsed what you were suggesting. If you had started off with "cutting down" rather than "stop" then I'd be right on board with you. Despite being a meat eater, I'm not cramming down my throat every chance I get and eschewing all other food stuffs. On average we eat way too much meat and that needs to be counteracted. But stop still definitely equals wank. Unless you'd like the majority of the population in the arctic circle to die of starvation. Then it's cunty.
