Coming from a different use,
one of the deciding factors was whether there was some sort of clutch/release mechanism
that allowed a rapid return of the powered arm to the start of its vector of motion.
As fate would have it,

@edmundro - what log splitter would you suggest? it can be left in a barn and the trees dragged to it, so electric or diesel will be fine. for splitting mainly sessile oak - either 4 or 6 way split. vertical or horizontal?
