  • This isn't already the case?

  • I thought so but seems not. Who knew

  • British Cycling, apparently.
Good to know my membership is going on something other than Wiggo's legal reps.

  • Highway code Rule 170 says you should give way to peds already crossing a side road, and some more modern cycle lanes have give way markings implying that cyclists retain priority over the side road from incoming traffic. However there isn't a universal rule about giving way to those carrying straight on, and most paint-on-pavement cycle lanes have give way markings for cycles at the side road (which is partly why they're so crap). Hence this petition, I guess.

I'm always amazed when I visit at how everyone in Berlin gives way like this, it just seems so natural and polite. Even if they changed the rules here though, it would take years to bed in.

edit: just seen that it already is in the highway code, but I guess the lack of a 'must' there means that it's just guidance rather than law:

    183
    When turning

keep as close to the left as is safe and practicable
give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane or tramway from either direction.

  • I was knocked off and suffered broken teeth and facial stitches when a driver failed to give way to me continuing straight on on a cycle superhighway. However there were give way markings for him as it was out of a small side road. But interesting to know in similar circumstances on another road, I could have been found at fault. The mind boggles.

I think this is the main point. It must be 'Must'

  • On the news this morning Aunty said it meant cars turning left would have to give way to bikes riding up the inside. It does not seem sensible to effectively promote riding up the inside of traffic generally, let alone a junctions.
However, I don't ride in London so not sure if the situation would be different for city riders.

  • To be fair, they had boardman on who gave a very sensible breakdown of the petition , it was the govt guy they had on who was promoting that view.

Also, it's not just a cars vs cycling rule in Europe, you always give way to those of lesser power in this situation. Ie cyclists would have to give way to peds, just as cars would give way to both.
