If your post-tax pay is less than 60% of your gross income, congratulations on being a higher-rate taxpayer? Unless I'm missing something.

Atcherly, if you earn £300k or so you'd probably take home 58% of your gross pay or thereabouts.

No, I got the numbers from the Evening Standard and rightmove. What am
I missing (genuine question)?Sample size? Who conducted the survey and for whom? Undisclosed numbers/workers? Likewise goes for Rightmove. Rightmove encompasses all people in London now? If their numbers are mathematically acquired from their own system, what about the rest that don't use that?
What about travel costs which you seem to have swung past. If I wasn't into cycling (and the majority of people in this city aren't), I'd get fucking rinsed every month commuting. There's no way I can afford to live in the first 3 zones, and I'm gonna go on a limb here and say anyone within the service industry (Something I can kinda speak of) and save anything.
It's a very big brush you're sweeping across with. -

Savings that constantly dwindle every time the markets turn south.

Sample size for a 30k median salary in London, don't know, ask the Evening Standard. Rightmove... like I said, that's my own median. 600 a month for a houseshare doesn't sound right?
You'll get rinsed by transport costs anywhere, that's why I choose to ride to work too - Zone 4 to the city is 45 minutes-ish, about the same as my commute. Replace my occasional car use with occasional public transport and broadly it'll be similar. A few people can't ride, but most people can. In some cities most people do.
Like I've said, you can't live the same lifestyle and expect to save more. But it's not easy and not everyone's able to do it, you're right. But I think most people on a median salary can save a fair chunk, and even on a low income it's possible to save a bit.

Bingo.
Even with my disabled rail card and Freedom Pass, there's no way I can afford to take the train and rent a place, both almost cost equal amount of money.

Under some stairs? Probably.
A few people can't ride, but most people can. In some cities most
people do.I can assure you that most people wouldn't cycle here if you paid them. I can't speak for other cities, and saying 'most people can' doesn't change the fact they don't. It's just not something they consider sane.
To me personally and I mean no offence by this, but you sound like you live a pretty cushty lifestyle really. Car no matter how shit, savings, trips to Scotland, potential to buy a house. Not bad at all. Congratulations.Just try not to use your own yardstick to measure others.

i've worked as a messenger for years but even i have days when i really hate commuting at peak times, it just really sucks. I really don't blame people jumping on the tube instead of dealing with it.
I hate to be all LONDON! but you don't live here and you can't relate -

go skip rummaging, make a decent home brew and probably wouldn't balk at a second hand pair of pants
2 out of 3 and I'm a 1%er. That's how you save, kids! Second hand undies ftw!

Keeps us all in jobs.
It's not something which is going away, but the environmental impacts are quite frightening.

I have bought a second hand pairs of bibs from @Smallfurry (#goochbrothers4lyfe) so I guess I'm two out of three too, I just have to get my head around the home brew!

I've thought about it but I really can't be arsed.
I struggle to fit anything in the kitchen with the beer that's in there already and if I started needing space for brew vessels and bottles and shite... nah, I'll save up for a bigger house first.
Because BIK?
