You'll get rinsed by transport costs anywhere, that's why I choose to ride to work too - Zone 4 to the city is 45 minutes-ish, about the same as my commute. Replace my occasional car use with occasional public transport and broadly it'll be similar. A few people can't ride, but most people can. In some cities most people do.
Like I've said, you can't live the same lifestyle and expect to save more. But it's not easy and not everyone's able to do it, you're right. But I think most people on a median salary can save a fair chunk, and even on a low income it's possible to save a bit.

people do.I can assure you that most people wouldn't cycle here if you paid them. I can't speak for other cities, and saying 'most people can' doesn't change the fact they don't. It's just not something they consider sane.
To me personally and I mean no offence by this, but you sound like you live a pretty cushty lifestyle really. Car no matter how shit, savings, trips to Scotland, potential to buy a house. Not bad at all. Congratulations.Just try not to use your own yardstick to measure others.

i've worked as a messenger for years but even i have days when i really hate commuting at peak times, it just really sucks. I really don't blame people jumping on the tube instead of dealing with it.

Sample size? Who conducted the survey and for whom? Undisclosed numbers/workers? Likewise goes for Rightmove. Rightmove encompasses all people in London now? If their numbers are mathematically acquired from their own system, what about the rest that don't use that?
What about travel costs which you seem to have swung past. If I wasn't into cycling (and the majority of people in this city aren't), I'd get fucking rinsed every month commuting. There's no way I can afford to live in the first 3 zones, and I'm gonna go on a limb here and say anyone within the service industry (Something I can kinda speak of) and save anything.
